Battlefield Pirates 2 Mod Update

The team behind the Battlefield Pirates 2 mod are back today showing off their latest media. Take a look:
Well ahoy folks i hope you've all had a nice summer, or winter depending on your hemisphere, but now we're back on course with another content update for you to throw your eyes over.

Today we'll be taking a look at the different ships in BFP2 which we've briefly mentioned before but never looked at in much detail. First we're going to take a look at the Cutter which, for the moment, is the largest controlable ship in the BFPirates 2 fleet.

The Cutter is one of the smallest fighting ships on the high seas, usually only used for scouting, and attacking lone merchant ships due to the small armorment it carried consisting of eight carronades, four mounted on each side of the hull and two swivel carronades mounted in the bow of the ship acting as bowchasers. Cutters are usually deep draughted ships and therefore carry large sails allowing the ship to be driven though the water at speed, in good winds anything up to 20 knots could be achieved thus allowing it to escape from most more heavily armored opponents.

That looks awesome. I heard Killi Vanilli from FH is doing some animation work for you guys, that guy is brilliant. Looking forward to seeing those weapon anims in the next few weeks.

Re: Battlefield Pirates 2 Mod Update

Thanks for the kind words guys. While I dont think we'll be able to claim that we've got the best mod ever - I think everybody thats had a chance to beta test it so far agrees that it's a lot of @#%! fun to play. BFP2 simply offers something completely different. With the long reload times on the flintlock weapons and no spray-n-pray fire fights, a lot of the combat comes down to shoot the musket, go for the pistol and if you miss it's cutlass time baby. Our niche is probably a focus on melee weapons, cannons and naval ships... all areas that arent normally associated with BF2.

That said understand that every mod, especially the full conversions, represent a heck of a lot of volunteer time by folks with much better things to do in life than make computer games. Every mod out there adds something to the Battlefield 2 experience so my heart says go play all of them. Many of the devs on the team are huge Project Reality fans, and Ive logged a lot of time on PoE and Battleracer etc. I too am anxiously awaiting FH2 to come out. All of these mods are free, and our current build sits at just 400MB, so I encourage everybody to give Pirates a go as well just to see if you like it or not. We'll be waiting for you on the high seas in literally no time at all now.

You have got to be kidding me. They are STILL working on this mod! lol. Crazy. This is becoming the Duke Nukem Forever of mods IMHO.

It looks like a great mod, but more than 2yrs in development without a single release? By the time they release it no one will be playing BF2 mods anymore lol.

If/when it comes out I am quite eager to play. Looks like with all the time it is taking it will be an extremely well thought out mod and great extension of BF2 gaming.

We will be showing off some of the cannons and ships we've brought in-game and I will be hosting a mod dev video fly through of one of our featured maps - Storm the Bastion. For you true fans, a bit of searching on a popular vid hosting site might unearth you a sneak peek or two of some early WIP.

Chins up mates, we are getting closer and closer to an initial release everyday and we have 90% of what we need already in-game. Like many other mods, we have been hamstrung by complications getting the player models rigged to the weapons so we can do our animations. There are very few devs out there that understand all the steps needed to pull this off, and shall I even need to discuss the support we get from DICE?

Fortunately, the various mod teams are cooperating, sharing talent and putting out tuts and vids so we all can move forward. Some of the devs at EoD have been particularly helpful in keeping BFP2 on track - so many thanks to those guys especially.

Despite some downtime in that one area, we have continued to press ahead in other departments - creating new character and concept art, more and more props and buildings, new maps and even a new gamemode. As I mentioned, some of this will be shown in a news update before year's end. Peace!
