    Highway Tampa Interview

EA has posted up a new interview today with the creator of the Highway Tampa map, Björn Sundell. Take a look:
The Highway Tampa beta for Battlefield 2 is now out and the sound of exploding tank shells is echoing across Battlefield 2 servers worldwide. We caught up with map designer Björn Sundell to talk about the creation of this tank-fest of a map.

I know you still spent quite a lot of time finishing off his work on it. What would you say makes it a good tank map?

The idea was obviously to bring back the big tank battles of 1942. It's not just about creating lots of wide open space and sticking in plenty of tanks though. Making sure you have a rolling landscape lets tanks take cover behind hills and hide in ridges so I spent a lot of time making sure the map had those features. I also wanted to limit the number of air vehicles so the focus could remain on the tanks. That's the reason there is no attack helicopter, it would adversely affect the intended balance of the map.

The draw distance is pretty high so you can have these long range tank fights. It's worth mentioning that it isn't any shorter than other tank maps, just that it's dusty yellow rather than sky coloured which might make it seem closer than usual when it actually isn't.

What is going to be different about the Battlefield 2142 version?

The 2142 version will feature both Titan Mode and Conquest. There will also be a good number of air vehicles and transports in the mix too. The layout of the terrain will be roughly the same with only a few modifications. I also tried to recreate the areas that are there in BF2 in the 2142. It's all done with different props since this is 2142 but otherwise it should feel familiar.

The thing is; will he get round to fixing the bugs in the BF2 version of the map, like the massive "ground sun" for instance.

its beta witch means it isnt done yet and last time i checked nobody was forced into anything, you can always hit no and not install the game.

if you really want to stick it to the man you could start playing a great mod like poe2, that would really teach them but of course nobody will ever leave their precious rank behind and have some fun.

and usually we are number 1 in each game but i assure you it isnt the servers, its our players and reputation.

we also have 3 more nonranked servers so your kinda helping prove my point, even you cant uncheck that nasty little rank box to see the non ranked servers. you'll rarely see me in a ranked server unless its to remove a smacktard, i play mods.

those ranked servers are mostly for publicity and to appease the 90% of stat whores in bf while we recruit the other 10% that are real players. we run mod servers as long as we can fill them but its very hard when others are showing vanilla rank.

Read the full interview. He says the sun glare will be fixed, and main bases will turn to uncaps to keep the action in the "center"

Cant even read vanilla news without mod whining inserted in there oh boy. The mods are mediocre at best and we have to hear all this assuming and factoid garbage about why why why the mods i like arent played. The ABR servers displaying vanilla ranks do not affect the weak mod player base. They just happen to suck up most of the players. Get over it, we arent missing anything. We could rank our mod servers but its not worth running mod servers when there are one or two with people at a time.

I used to play in your USI server all the time, loved it. too bad that went south lol. But yes, I do know you speak the truth because I see you supporting the mod scene on a regular/daily basis.

it will be back with the new release as well as a new dcon one and poe2. we run them as long as we can fill them but its just so hard to keep players in the server when theres other ones showing vanilla ranked but you'll always see me playing along with a few hardcore fmj guys. im all about mods, its always the most friendliest team orientated environment in the game, i cant get enough.

id love to see a port for dcon, would be nice to see a AC130 on highway tampa.....BOOM!!

thats your opinion and you are entitled to it.

personally, I think vanilla BF2 is boring and if it wasn't for mods I would have left for greener pastures long ago.

I play FMJ once in a while.
                          Good decent servers.
I'm just going to wait for the "final version" of Tampa to come out.

:salute: iv played Highway tampa quite a lot,its a good map BUT it needs some decent helicopters for god sake plus it only has 1 jet per team.Co:salute: mpared to the amount of ground vehicles i find that there is no war to be fought in the air and i find this a let down for a map with such high expectations

That's because it's a Tank map. If you want more fighters and attack helos there are plenty of other maps available for you.
