Re: Total BF2 Reviews Desert Conflict v0.1

I'm glad the review mentionned the drawbacks of bringing DC gameplay to DCon. I used to be a DC flyboy, raking up dozens if not hundreds of frags a amp in apaches and su25s so I have fairly good memories of DC. But as soon as I managed to join a DCon server I was greeted by the worst of what DC could be:
    - baseraping at the beginning of a map
    - bunny jumping, instaproning
    - utter lack of teamplay

Don't get me wrong, I like DCon and have played it quite a bit since the release, but other BF2 mods have been able to address those issues and I think DCon should try to address them too. I'm not saying that DCon should feel like PR, but some things are just detrimental to the gameplay and moving away from a strict DC remake will make the game better not worse.

Just for the record, bf2 guns only have ONE recoil setting for everything. This is something that really bugged me when coding the handweapons. They do have different deviations (randomness) of the bullet spray for prone, crouch, etc... which i made about 1/10th of stock bf2. From your comment it's unclear if you're saying we did or did not use that approach...

we can (kind of) fix instaproning, but there doesnt seem to be a way to fix bunny hopping.

Does a dedicated pilot have a problem with bunnyhopping and lack of teamplay?

I'm a footsoldier by heart and never jump into anything that flies higher than 6 feet into the air.. longest flight I've taken ingame was into a ravine with a LeoII in POE2
I hope DCON can adress the extensive bunnyhopping that many players persist with.. But the teamplay issue is a player mentality problem.
I'm really happy with the DCON alpha build, it holds a lot of promise for the future! Lagg and bugz are part of a alpha, that's why it's called and alpha. The community has to report bug details to the DCON devs so we can hope for a much improved beta-release soon..

How? The prone-to-standing-delay (or something like this) DiCE introduced in 1.41 is a joke. It would be more effective if it were vice versa or still more effective using both.

I have a little complaint about the mod. I think its funny shooting straight stingers and such, but I really miss the teamplay factor at the helos for example. I dislike that the "gunner" only has the main gun to shoot. Would be more challenging (skillwise and to push teamplay) if the gunner gets the hellfire tv-missiles. Another complaint is about the noob tube (m203 or gp25). Was it really this inaffective in DC (can't remember)? You have to hit the people nearly straight to kill them. They must be splashing like grenades and be deadly for both - attacker and victim if to close to the explosion.

Its an alpha after all and DC wasn't perfect in its first release too... I hope there will be coming some stuff soon!

We appreciate the review Hksniper, as we have enjoyed all the ones you have done thus far. We are taking advice from all the fans and players we can, and we will do our best to balance what DC players miss, and what new tweaks we can make to carry on the direction DC was heading.

You just created your account today, and this is your first post?

Is there lag, oh yes. Are there some bugs, a couple that I noticed.
don't see what date of account creation has to do with my opinion, but ok. I'LL GIVE A DETAILED RESPONSE LATER.

Yea, that's why I said "kinda"

There's more: prone-delay-after-jump, jump-delay-after-prone,stand-delay-from-prone and prone-delay-from-stand. Theres some others I believe, but I'd have to go dig them up. With these there might be an effective solution to dolphin diving, but care needs to be taken to make sure everything else isn't totally screwed up in the process.

I looked at the BF2.exe searching for therse strings. What I really meant was there is only a "fire-delay-from-prone". There has to be a "fire-delay-to-prone" to really fix dd - but because it is hard-coded, there is no chance to see something like this in any mod.
This is the main reason why I played BF2 very seldom before DCon came out. I always see people flying at me or rolling to prone with no sight and/or deviation changes.

Decrease the crazy BF2 jump height and disable fire when jumping. Now your mod rewards bunnyhoping: players can jump to the Moon crazily and still fire AND with perfect acuracy ----> ergo, they will do.

BF Mods can't really avoid bunnyhopers (thanks DICE.../sarcasm), but at least don't reward that behaviour, if the best option to survive is save stamina and sprint to find cover, players will do. If the best option is bunnyhoping they will jump like grasshopers on crack, and the battlefield will be a circus

Yeah I was just about to post this while reading this thread. The only way the DCon guys can reduce bunnyhopping, if they want to, is to remove the ability to jump and shoot. You could also try lowering the jump height like Lobo said, but that may have adverse affects on other areas of the game. Ultimately its up to you DCon devs, but bunny hopping will definitely continue as long as you allow people to jump and shoot.

Thanks to Kensei (one of our testers) it looks like theres a way increase the bullet deviation while jumping (only). I've already reduced jump height for our next series of tests. We just got to make sure the new height blends well with the existing statics/maps

good luck with that. I've had bunch of fun in Lost Village and Mosul lately jump-proning to get through windows and other small openings. I don't think I was able to do that in BF2.

good point. thats why we'll need to thoroughly test any changes

After reading this review, I'm happy to know I'm not the only one receiving large quantities of lag, bugs, and crashes. The only thing I disagree about is the mod being playable. Although at times very fun, I cannot last longer than two rounds on any DCon server. Sometimes I will get the click the Join Game button CTD or a glitch/bug were my screen will freeze on the same picture for a couple of minutes or the very severe/dreaded Blue Screen Crash Error. After experiencing that disaster, I'm putting DCon on hold until a future release were fixes will hopefully have occurred. I just hope I will not have to wait as long as I have waited for this Alpha version to be released. :-P

Runs great for me. Not everyone has the lag problems. but a patch is on the way.
