Total BF2 Reviews Desert Conflict v0.1

HKSniper is back today to give you all his latest mod review, this time covering the recently released Desert Conflict v0.1 mod. Here's the intro to this new article:
Desert Conflict has been one of the many modifications that have been anxiously anticipated for Battlefield 2. After a long time of teasing the community and internal testing, an alpha has finally been made available for the public to play.

The goal of Desert Conflict is to bring the game play and feel from the modification Desert Combat for Battlefield 1942. The original Desert Combat was a very popular modification in a modern setting of the first gulf conflict. Desert Conflict aims to bring back the weapons, vehicles, maps and arcade style game play that Desert Combat was known for. But does it deliver for the fans?

Thanks for the review and feedback!

BTW, there are 4 gamemodes. You forgot about Domination and Objective modes.

I would have to agree, and add that some maps lag a little too much, but they have said they are gonna correct that.

Re: Total BF2 Reviews Desert Conflict v0.1

I found the lag unbearable at times. A few times i had to log out and find another server. The servers pinged good, so could it have been a problem with code or weird statics?

Not to nitpick, but also some textures and models were a little off. The texture for the cockpit in the attack helo looked like it came off of MS paint. I can't remember exactly wich gun model it was (medic's ak?), but the edges seemed to flicker....Maybe it was my vidcard, but I don't get that in BF2 or 2142.

I guess many people from the old DC community were happy to see thier favorite maps rehashed. I was hoping for a mod that was unique in that aspect. Some of the maps remade were nicely done, and the stand-out maps in this alpha build, were new maps. The weapons bunker, and road to mosul were great fun. I hope that they release some new original maps. After all the name of the mod is DCON, or Desert Conflict, not Desert Combat.

Overall gameplay was fun. There are so many twists and turns in Road to Mosul, I almost got dizzy trying to navigate stairs and tight corners.

All in all, still a great alpha build, and I excitedly await future releases.

no offense. i'm glad that you made a review and all, but try not to sound like a TOTAL fanboy, try being a journalist. you didn't point out any off the annoyances like the obstructions of view in Bradley and AAVs. What about the use of the M109 arty model for both factions? And what about using BF2 random recoil and spray instead of the DC/POE2 type (i believe you said that they actually DID use that, which they have NOT).

Your comment about player models being similar to DC, have you actually played DC? The iraqis actually looked like iraqis in that mod, without the bags flapping around their hips. the map textures are severely dark-hued, especially on el alamein where the sand is almost a white-yellow colour, and is made far too dark in DCON.

the hind was NOT slow and cumbersome, it's significantly faster than the apache in DC, albeit much harder to control. that being said i'm very pleased with the helicopter physics. they are back to where they should be.

something else i believe you should have mentioned, was the lack of converting GOOD DC maps. Inshallah Valley? It was terrible back then, and it's terrible now (to use the same format of comparison you used about 5 times). maps like basrah's edge and basrah nights, bocage and the such should have been recreated. again, the GOOD DC maps that were converted have been made EXCELLENTLY, namely Gazala, Eastings, El Al, Desert Shield and LV.

last gripe about the mod, but this may be the most important. i don't know if the coders at DCon know how, its likely VERY difficult, but the fog MUST be thinned a little bit to allow for a more enjoyable mod. flying the mirage is worthless because of it's speed in this fog, long distance tank battles are non-existent, and the bright desert blue skies are made dreary by this disgusting fog of war EA has bestowed on us.

don't get me wrong, i'm a fan of this mod, a very avid player of it, but please give an honest review, not COMPLETELY biased. even a little bit is acceptable. thank you for the review, you're contributing the community a lot, but accept constructive criticism. if my language was a little strong, just take it as a measure of how i feel about it.

So, what hate team are you from Stealth? lol

Inshallah was a great map then, and it is again. His opinions about DCON are spot on IMO. The DCON arty system is great, on both sides.

You just created your account today, and this is your first post?

Is there lag, oh yes. Are there some bugs, a couple that I noticed.

I always thought DC textures were quite poor, both in DC1 as in DC2.

Who really gives a sh*t about post counts, they certainly wont make your penis any bigger.. though from the way some ppl carry on here I may be wrong .

I truly agreed with stealths post and no offense to HKSniper, but I did feel as though your report was a bit biased.

Inshallah has and all ways will be a crap map.
The FOG is a big pain in the arse as well on some maps.
Apart from those 2 things though, I'm very happy with it.
All it needs is basrah nights and Oil Rig .

There is only 1 DC (Desert Combat). This DC is actually DCon (Desert Conflict) dont confuse the two as they have no relation.

                    nice review HKSniper

                    Good Job Stealth
Reviews and fans alike should capture a persons true opinion while stating the facts. One thing for me is negativity helps with fixing the problems people are too afraid to mention. Not every one is going to love your mod. Just like USI look how many people are playing it at the moment. We cant do anything about that but just move on and thats part of the modern modding community. People will praise a new mod at first but delete or ignore them like all the rest.

It is always good to have reviews that bring out the best qualities though. As the point of the review shouldnt be to discourage people from playing it.

Did you even take the time to read the review? I was not aiming as a total fanboy. Look at all of the other reviews I have done. They've all been through a default point of view. I did point out that there ARE bugs, glitches and stability issues. I try to be nice in my reviews to help influence the team. Much like how I gave the CQB mod a LOT of publicity. Rather than typing something stupid as...

It's an alpha so it sux k thx.

As for DC. Yes I did play it, and I played it competive on TWL. I said that the models are SIMILAR not the SAME. Similar and SAME are two totally different things. They sort of resemble the old, but also having the same game models. I did say that the models were merely RESKINS.

And I do not know what kind of hind you've been flying. Cruising speed on the Hind can be faster, but in combat the Apache proves to be more agile and faster acceleration.

Read through the review rather than skimming and coming up with assumptions. If the modification had been terrible, I would have given it a much worse of an appeal, but I do NOT give any reviews any sort of score. I tell it how it was by my experience, and when I played I had a fairly enjoyable experience.

I apologize for missing out on the other play modes, I missed them because I saw no servers running them.

                      And no offense taken.

You do good work Hksniper and I for one am grateful for the time you take to write these reviews :) Being a dev myself, i hardly have time to play all the other mods with my head stuck in 3dmax or the editor, so its nice to have a write up of what the other mods are doing.

HKsniper has always been a great helper of the mod community and always tries to nurture and point out the good points in other peoples work to inspire and help continue this bf2 community which always seems to have developers dropping like flies. Show a little respect. You're not paying for these mods or these reviews.
