Re: Dice Meets With Mod Teams

Well its just a small detail, but notice I said "how many great game modes come out". Meaning, the ones who arent out yet.

Many of the game modes being dropped by are not at all similar to what PR has done so far. These batch of MODs for BF2 are really pushing the envelope with modes, and I think the public will be very happy for that. I know I am, I love lots of game modes to pick from.

On the content of the conversation, we cannot publicly speak, so you all have to be patient on what is about to happen, in the mean time, have to deal with the official response.
What’s with the secrecy of the meetings outcome? I mean we’re all used to promises made but not kept, so DICE said something like “We’ll allow you to track stats but not have access to weapon unlock features, but first we have to pass the idea by EA for approval”

Re: Dice Meets With Mod Teams

No one needs permission to track stats as far as I know. There are several groups who have developed 3rd party stats tracking systems, that have no invlovement with DICE or EA. I also dont know of any MODs that are going to have an unlock system to speak of, so that couldnt really apply. We used to track stats in different ways with Desert Combat, and EA had no input on that either as far as I remember.

I h ave no idea what its really about yet though.

Re: Dice Meets With Mod Teams

A couple of things come to mind when I read this.

Dice segregated the community when they implemented the Ranking System and Official Servers only. How many of you knew that Unreal Tournament 2004 has a built in stats system that any server can choose to use or not use? DICE, By making it something "important", has created a rift in the community and taken the fun out of the Battlefield Franchise. UT2004, it is a non-issue. DICE/EA made this hole, now they have to lay in it.

As much as I appreciate what ABR is trying to do, again stats for the sake of competition sucks. Stats for the sake of having fun between your buddies is ok, but when it became serious, I was turned off. I don't want the mods to support stats. I want the mods to put out fun games.

Something I do not get at all is EA has an Official Mod Coordinator. Why isn't he involved in this? Why hasn't he been speaking to the mod community all along? It is a sad day when you have to bypass Official channels to get anything done.

At this time, everything from DICe is hearsay. I don't want lip service. I want action.

AND FOR THE LOVE OF DRINKING AND FAT CHIX, DO NOT CARRY THESE PROBLEMS OVER TO BF2142!!!!!!!

Maybe not, but it wouldn't currently be possible for a mod to give multiple weapon selections to a certain class, correct? Like making all the unlocks available for all the classes so that everyone can choose from 2 weapons per class? It seems like the unlock system has been removed unless you're running a ranked server (i.e. global unlocks disabled on unranked servers). Maybe no mod team has decided to go with an unlock system and persistent characters in their mod because they are locked out from the unlock system.

Those official channels that Atomm mentions -- where is Colin Clarke, the DICE Community Manager that was announced in April. I've not seen a single post from him in any public forum. If he were accessible to the community (mod develeopers...), these issues could have been passed on long ago and perhaps all this crap with the 1.3 patch could have been avoided. It seems like DICE is out of touch with the modding community, and keeping in touch seems like something a Community Manager should be doing.

I do agree that the stats system has taken some of the fun and teamwork out of the game.. People are more worried about knifing a bunch of guys than holding flags. They've become self-centered. DICE is heading down the same path with 2142, and it's a shame, really.

Project Reality had a plan for using the unlock system for different weapon configurations I believe but when EA locked out the unlock system in one of the earlier patch it made it neer imposable for them to do, I think they were working on a workaround though.

FH2 wasnt there because most of our team are Europeans who arent comfortable with their English on teamspeak, and those of us who speak it natively are in the wrong timezone.

The official Mod coordinator resides in a different timezone. and therefore couldnt attend.
As there is nothing 'DONE' yet, we didnt bypass any official channels.

this is great news, I guess. Getting across the rift so to say, but it would have been very sweet to have attended. I'm not sure if we were invited or not but if we weren't, I simply take you overlooked us.

There is a ranked USI server up now, like that ties directly into your BF2 account and displays/allows you to build on those stats. Don't know if EA helped us with this or if the clan that put it up just figured out how, but it was damn cool to see and play on.

Re: Dice Meets With Mod Teams

                          Ok peeps heres a plan,

                          - Intergrate the stats into the BFHQ so people have access to it there (basically a drop down box to select the game, expansion, or mods stats you want to view)

                          - Make it either the stats kept by either EA's or a 3rd parties server

                          - Allow mod team to mod the stats to add there own creativity to it,
Examples: handgun unlocks, equipement, gun addons like scopes silencers.

                          - Each mod gets there own unique stats code so (like a serial code to a game to allow mods access to EA stats dat base) people cant hack the stats or anything.

                          - Each mod that want "Offically" kept stats has to go through some kind of registration process and abide by some terms set by EA and Mod Teams (Compromise) so we dont have a little mini-mod that no one plays having stats.

                          - And for users they can either opt-in or op-out to have stats tracked for them in game, that way people that dont care about stats can not have to see them or worrie about them. (this may cause problems with unlocks)

                          - For Servers the EA Games "Offically Ranked Servers" will still cost money, but for "Offically Ranked Mods" the server files will be free and ANYONE can run them.

                          ---------------------------------------------------

I did not attend the Mod Meeting myself and keep in mid this is just what I think should be done, but this sounds like something that should be done and I have thought this is how mods stats should have been delt with from day 1. Any questions comments please post away.

1st. EA ranked system is by far not able what we can do. that will probably mean : Its working as it is, DONT TOUCH IT

2nd. Ever thought of WHY the ranking deterrent is in? - it not bcoz of our 50000 players and a non-profit ABR.
You might wanna look in the way of : Commercial Companioes making money outtta there stats systems
or : the false displayed 'Ranked' servers in the serverlist.

                            what do YOU think?

and pvt SHifty: what you talk about, that exactly whats ABR is about.
what you state, is what we actually have already, for a month or 4-5 :)

If there would only be a CLEAR rule on stats sytems, or appoint 1 non-commercial- ranking authority with people at the weel who doesnt have a conflict of interest. or some other hidden Commercial agenda.

                            - Note to Ninjo : This is probably a ABR server, i know my co developer TOJO from the 7th regiment was ranking the USI mod.

as augustus said, we were invited and did plan on being involved, but didn't make it on the day for various reasons.

i've independantly talked to dice on this issue and understand the reasoning behind 1.3 breaking ABR, even though i don't totally agree with it. really, better communication by dice (making the changelog 100% accurate would be plenty) would've nipped this in the bud.
