Update: The Captain America Casting Narrows

This just in from the G4:

The search for Captain America still lingers on. A few weeks back, a short-list of candidates to take the title role for the upcoming First Avenger: Captain America had been making the rounds across the blogs. Since then, the original nine names have been narrowed-down to two...then added one.

Allow us to welcome Chris Evans to fold. While the name doesn't exactly ring a bell, the face certainly would. Of course, Evans is already a veteran of Marvel media, best known for playing Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in the two Fantastic Four films. (A franchise which is already set for a reboot.) Besides those films, he is also known for his role in 2009's "special powers" film, Push.

It's difficult to gauge whether Evans would make a good Cap. He's got the all-american look, but his generally playful demeanor is what made him perfect for his role as Johnny Storm. When it comes to Cap on the other hand, that may be a mixed bag. He needs to be a protagonist who is down on his luck in the beginning, looking towards an uncertain future, when an opportunity for greatness comes his way. The audience needs to care for the character and identify with his situation. To be honest, Chris Evans is not the first name that comes to mind in that respect. However, who knows? He might have an audition that just blows it out of the water.

Ah, but what about the the existing candidates?

While nothing was officially confirmed, the original list of nine consisted of John Krasinski, Chace Crawford, Michael Cassidy, Patrick Flueger, Scott Porter, Wilson Bethel, Mike Vogel, Garrett Hedlund, and Jensen Ackles. As of now, only Mike Vogel and Garrett Hedlund are still in the mix.

Vogel (pictured left) is somewhat of an unknown, whose most prominent work was a small role in Cloverfield. He might be Marvel's "prudent choice" in the sense of attaining an unknown talent at a bargain price. His situation is the polar opposite of the other survivor, Garrett Hedlund (pictured right.) With Tron: Legacy hitting the publicity front, he seems to be on the verge of stardom. As I mentioned in the earlier rundown, Hedlund could very well be a bankable star by the time this movie hits. It was being said that he dropped out after his agents rejected the 300K, 9-film option with which he was presented. However, it doesn't dismiss the possibility of a counter-offer from Marvel, who may still want to take the potential stardom of Hedlund into consideration and give in to his demands before his stock REALLY soars.

Personally, I'm kind of bummed that Scott Porter and Jensen Ackles are out of the running, but it could also be a great opportunity for someone else to come into his own.

And no, the human torch is not Captain america. He's the god damn human torch.
