battlefield 2 freezes followed by system restart

Hi everyone,
I installed battlefield 2 demo on my system a while ago and this is the first time it gives me strange problems. Usually after 5 to 10 minutes, battlefield 2 demo crashes and locks the computer. At that point, ALT+TAB or CTRL+ALT+DELETE doesn't work as well as num lock on keyboard freezes. Battlefield 2 screen freezes and after a few seconds the computer restarts completely followed by initial post screen. Here is what I have tried prior to posting on this forum to fix the problem and in the following order.

- Reinstalled battlefield 2 demo
- Upgrade video drivers to catalyst 6.3
- Reinstalled all motherboard and chipset drivers
- Complete virus and spyware scan (using Norton Antivirus 2002, Adaware SE, Spybot and Spyware Doctor) None found.
- Used windows CHKDSK on disk and scanned for errors

None of the above fixed my problem and battlefield 2 demo continues to crash relatively after 5 to 10 minutes resulting in a system restart. After windows boots up again. An error report is generated to be sent. Here is the report:

Error code 100000ea, parameter1 82581c98, parameter2 825af9f8, parameter3 f7996cb4, parameter4 00000001.

I would like to make a note that this problem "might" have started to occur after using a few registry cleaners that I downloaded from download.com to cleanup windows but thats just an assumption, and I've already tried reinstalling battlefield 2 which did'nt help either.

And finally here are my machine specs to the best of my knowledge

Intel Pentium 4 2.4 ghz
Asus P4P800S Motherboard
768 MB Ram
Sapphire 9250 128 MB
120 GB Hard Drive
Enermax Power Supply

Have you tried doing a system restore to a time before you used the registry cleaners?

logicgate your problem is the ram. You do not have enough ram. I would recommend 2 Gb of ram and i would also recommend for you to get a 256mb video card to be able to play BF2 without any problems.

No i haven't tried that, but it seems like all my system restore points have been deleted as well. I assume one of the disk cleaners I used must have done this.

I would recommend 2 Gb of ram and i would also recommend for you to get a 256mb video card to be able to play BF2 without any problems.

Thanks Widki I will give that a thought, but the problem is all my RAM slots have been taken up since I recently upgraded my memory. So upgrading RAM is not an option for me anymore (since it will be expensive and I will have to throw out my 256 MB stick).

Any ideas? this is really annoying as my system restarts...

Ignore the comment about the ram.
It really is not necessary, at the most you only need 1 gig, i have 2gb, and it caps during the game at about 42% usage.

I have anohter machine with minimum requirements 2200 sempron/512mb ram/radeon 9550 and it runs the demo better without restarts or any other issue except having to use mostly low settings using the demo

I think your on the right track with the registry cleaner. the restore idea is good.

If you are using many usb devices (esp. joysticks, keyboards, mice) or a pci device (ie. sound card, net card) that will increase the chance of it being a registry related occurance. Always check what files are being deleted using the registry cleaners if it looks like it might be usable(questionable) then dont delete it.

but yeah ignore the ram comment, that really is not your issue unless your ram is just faulty, but that would require a complete replacement of the bad module or modules not an increase.

Additionally could you check your IRQ's to see if there is alot of sharing going on?
I have been suspecting that could be a problem for some people.

I have the exact same problem, have tried cleaning the reg, istalled omega drivers (catylist 6.3) anti virus anti trojan, tuneupXP, reinstalled ATI 6.3 drivers, Defrag but all in all, our vidcard is not supported by BF2, looks like a new vidcard for us.

If you play and your PC suddenly makes restart then its caused by your PSU(Power Supplie) or if you have overclocked your CPU then it may be caused by too little voltage on your CPU.

Alright thanks for the feedback. I'm sure its not my power supply, since system restart only happens during battelfield 2. I ran prime95 for 5 hours and no system restarts whatsoever. My cpu temperature during prime95 torture test was 41 C and system temp was 32 C. My problem still remains unsolved. I can't restore the registry either since they got deleted. Is there any other way to restore the registry? Can someone please think what other possible cause could there be. If it is registry problem, shouldn't reinstalling battlefield 2 fix it (which it didn't) ? Thanks.

I'm 98% sure your power supply is not causing your problem that guy probably doesnt know what hes talking about...

Ever wonder why XP rarely ever blue screens? Becuase when it would normally blue screen microsoft has windows restart your comp instead of giving you an error number to track down...ya know something that might be useful....

Anyway heres how to stop it from restarting, it probably wont fix your problem but your comp wont reset:

1) Go to control panel > Open "System"
2) Click the advanced tab
3) Click the "Settings" button in the "Start up and Recovery" area.
4) Under the "System Failure" area uncheck "Automatically Restart"
5) Hit OK and close

Now cause it to crash on purpose and it should give you a blue screen error instead of restarting. Write down some basic info on the error code it give you and search it on google and you should be able to find the actual cause or solution to your problems. It should be a string of numbers like 00x00000... or something similar. On a side note 99.99999999% of system builders overestimate the power needs of their machine by a lot. I have a system with 7 drives, 2 video cards and 3 pci cards on a 365 watt when I only actually need about 280-300.

I don't think your graphics card is supported by BF2. BF2 has some very unforgiving requirements unfortunately. If you got another BF2 capable PC, try running BF2 with your vid card and see if it crashes.

Looks like your drivers are the problem, but try to completely uninstall your drivers and reinstall them from safe mode. You shouldnt need to roll back to older drivers so long as the ones you have now arent beta. Also keep that "Cat Control Center" crap off your system and just get the needed driver components. That or try Omega drivers.

and my problem is solved!!. Took 5 days to troubleshoot.

mofo.au, all you need to do is uninstall your current drivers and install the older one that I gave above and your problem will be solved! So its not my powersupply, or the video card, or the ram. However thanks to all for opinion and feedbacks.

Therefore I'm never gonna download registry cleaner other than CCleaner and TweakNow that I've been using for a while now (both free) and no driver updates for me unless absolutely necessary (especially catalyst 6.2 and 6.3 are off my list). Also, to my surprise spybot found a spyware called registry cleaner :laugh:
