I have been on Servers that are always populated but they don't seem any different that the Servers my Clan runs and we can only get people on them if we get 8 or 10 of our guys playing. Same Maps. Same Rules. Mid-Continent location, favorable pings. Whats the secret?

Re: What makes a good server
there are several things that make a great server.
Ping is the first thing.
Map rotation
rules that are resonable
and the biggest thing is Admins that are not dicks to the players that play on the server. And Admins that are present all the time. I used to run a network game center and the best thing is to try and have an admin on all the time and it takes time to find people that were mature enough to handle the situations. No one likes to hop in a server and have roudy players and no one there to take care of it.
My CS server was full almost 100% of the time 24/7 -

Re: What makes a good server
Well im torn with agreeing and dis-agreeing. Our clan(DeadPresidents) server, well we used to be ranked in the top 5 bf2 servers, its a ranked 64 man most strike penn with monthy voting changes, used to be constanly full, till december when our bandwitch was confirmed hack and we got hit with a $500 server bill 2 weeks before chrsitmas, well needless we operate with donations from our generous members, but the expense forced us to shutdown. Now we went back up in latter part of january, and since cannot keep it full, as we have not changed any settings. WE, like your clan, sit patienly to get it running, when before we have to used our admin privelges to make room for our members. Were currently sitting empty till we spend dedidcated(although) wasted hours trying to get fired up so others can enjoy. Would love to talk with your clan or others with the same problem, See if there is a resoanble way to gain public attention once again. by the way. Love the sit, people here extremly respectable. Props!Comment

Re: What makes a good server
2 rounds per map. if you make it 3 people will get bored with the same maps - especially if it's dragon valley.
make sure the teams stay even (in skill and numbers) - don't clan-stack (keep clan members evenly distributed) and everyone should stay in.
it's not the vets you need to worry about leaving - think about it from a "i just bought this game" point of view and more people will stay in the server.Comment

Order of importance:
Ping
Getting the word out
Good administration
Good (ie, non smacktard) player base
Map rotation
Round count (1 round sucks, 4 blows)
