Hehe... this gets asked very often.
Just launch a single player game. The single player mode actually acts like a local bot match. If you've got your LAN setup, he should be able to see you on his local servers list.

        yup. That should do it.
Edit: Mind you, I haven't actually tried this. I've just seen it commented on quite a few times 'round here.

open up command prompt, and type ipconfig it'll display ur IP...192. something i think...then u start a single player round...he then goes to lan server browser and connects by ip

so like it just says connection failed if i type in his IP and try to join

does anything else have to be messed with?

it says my connection has failed and to check my interenet connection... which is fine :)

Re: playing on a lan with bots

Ok well... he started up battlefield 2 and join on his online name
then i signed onto bf2 and used my online name

then while he was playing in a single player game i went to multiplayer and click join local and his update because nothing was there...

then i told him to give me his IP which he did (yes we know how to do that were in debt because of it too) and i put the IP into the IP address spot on the 'connect to IP'

non of that worked so im here

Chances are perty high you don't actually have a LAN setup. If you're sharing internet via a Hub, this doesn't count as a LAN. You have to configure it.

A LAN needs to be set up. You need to have the proper protocalls in place for your setup to actually be a LAN.

Can you normally just pass files back and forth via your desktop? Do you have drives mapped via eachother's machines? Do you have a "My Local Connections" icon?

Sounds to me like you need to start at the start here and get yourself a LAN setup. In that case, you should do a google for "LAN Setup Windows XP".
