I'm not an expert but I am pretty sure the cursors on laser mouses move more fluently than optical. Higher DPI I think.

      What exactly does dpi mean?

        EDIT:
DPI is how many pixels the lense can see per inch, or count. DPI is kinda wrong it should be CPI, Count Per Inch.

The best mice out there are Razer Copperhead, Logitech G5 and G7, which are latest models from both companies.

Copperhead has better specs, but how you like to hold the mouse is just as important, so trying a mouse before purchase is preferable.

Another question, i read some stuff about the G5 and what do these mean?
                Image Processing: 6.4 megapixels/second
                Max. Acceleration: 20g

Take the difference between Razer Copperhead, Logitech G5 and G5 on the one side and earlier models on the other.

These new mice have USB polling rates/sample rates increase from default 125Hz. This is more important, rather than it is an laser mouse IMO.

Meaning instead of polling every 8ms(125Hz) Copperhead polls every 1ms (1000Hz) and G5 and G7 every 2ms(500Hz).

This is latest innovation in mice hardware. Before that nothing much has happened in way of innovation, and most mice were just same hardware in different coating, and increasing the DPI without this really didn't help that much.

E.g. take the MX1000, there was nothing different in that mouse's lense and in other optical mice of same age. But a great marketing campaign imprintet LASER on everyones minds and ppl think it is so much better.

What really could, and now has made a difference in mouse performance and handling, is the USB polling rate. That's why many ppl hex edited their usbport.sys file before, to get higher than 125Hz USb sample rates on their corded gaming mice. This is what latest mice now has this feature builtin.

Before this the differences between older and newer mice models weren't that great. Differences were only increases in DPI.

Image processing is how many pixels that is preoccess per sec. It depends on lense size and refresh rate of camera in the mouse.

E.g, most lenses are 30x30 pixels, meaning 900 pixels in total.

You then take the refresh rate of the lense, e.g. 7080 for Copperhead.

                  900 x 7080 = ~6.4 Mpixels/sec.

Max Acceleration is just how fast you can move the mouse and still have it tracking.

To answer the question between laser and optical... optical uses an LED whereas a laser mouse uses a laser. You can look this stuff up on wikipedia :)
