Okay. I know I'll get flamed for this, but I guess in the end that will be part of the fun of this post.
I used to be an avid proponent against the n00b-t00b and you could frequently catch me saying or typing things similar to the following:
"Why the F*** would people walk around with a n00b-t00b out all time? Shouldn't they just ready their standard rifle and switch to the nt (lol i made it an acronym) when they have a far off target they need to address?"
"nt is so lame because it's a one shot kill. There is no chance to defend ones self once addressed with a nt shot. It is just simply over and you are dead."
"haha, what a lamer! That nter just killed himself when he killed me because i was too close and we both caught the explosion. What a n00b!"
Now, however, I'm a new man(/n00b?)
~ I finally dug in and told myself I was going to learn how to use all the kits as effectively as I could. Now I haven't been very methodical about this new focus of mine, but I have recently found really good uses for the Assault class. I play a lot of SF and Warlord has this palace in the back that when you are cramped up in it, I find the Assault class to be fantastic.
The biggest single thing I discovered? Ballistic aiming takes skill. And I suck at it, lol. Getting better all the time though. Seriously, that grenade doesn't shoot directly at a single point I aim at. It lobs up and then drifts down. Holy sh*t! What a pain in the ass. You know what? I'm starting to get a feel for it finally and I can start to pick people off when they are almost just munchkins far off. I sometimes amaze myself with how I "feel" out an upward angle to lob one off and it hits within 5 "game feet" of some soldier far off. I also am starting to amaze myself with how I can navigate a successful log in tight areas and most times avoid myself and get the enemy instead. Since the newer patches, the bounce off of close walls is almost like playing pool sometimes with all the angles involved! :)
Honestly, I know ballistics are a science and you can calculate the angle of trajectory and the mass of the object, it's speed, and where exactly it'll land. But try pulling out your protractor, Ti-85 and civilian engineering manual in the middle of an intense firefight or when finding yourself alone and a squad of 3 or 4 enemies advancing on your position. I don't care what people say, this sh*t is an artform and I have the deepest respect for other nters that can pick me off at a moments notice. Christ I'm jealous of them.
I walk around with my nt out almost always now. Very few exceptions to this rule. My first hit is always an attempt with my nt. Wipe out the first guy that notices me quickly so he can't retaliate, then quickly switch over to my rifle to finish up anyone else that checks out where that nt came from. I'm finding I usally last a bit longer this way as more often than not, rarely more than one person seems to spot an incoming troop. Most times everyone is sorta scattering out and not watching all directions. Everyone sorta picks a direction and goes. So if I take out the guy that found me first, then I've got a grace period of a few more seconds in which I can start engaging the other saps that don't know what just happened and I know stand a chance to cap the flag I was moving in on.
The one shot kill nature of the nt is awesome. Of course it's a one shot kill. Do you all know just how long it takes to reload that b*tch? If I miss you with it chances are you will have the advantage on me. It will take time for me to switch weapons. If I decide to reload and take another shot at it all, I'll definitely need to find cover from you inbetween. Run your ass up on me and take me out by surprise. If you just sit back and try to trade bullets for my grenade lobs... you will lose. Almost always. Upset because I hit you the first time and tagged you spot on and so you are dead? Go me!
Sorry, to the victor go the spoils. Like I said, it's hard to aim, if I hit you dead on, rock on! Go me!
Close quarters with the nt is worth it. Chances are I'll probably end up killing myself too, yes. But, most times I'd rather trade my life for one enemy than just die. A K
ratio of 1.00 ain't shabby. I find most people in games are well below a 1.00 ratio. So if I traded my life for yours, so be it. Hopefully my team behind me will have a medic, and if not, hopefully they will use our dead bodies as a doorway to a successful capture shortly thereafter. Either way, most of the time it's usually worth it.
So in recap, I'm a n00b-t00ber and proud of it.
Have you hugged your team's n00b-t00ber today!?!?
