I'm new to the forums. I've done several searches and read more threads than I care to count and I still cannot fly the jets with any usefullness.

I am using a mouse and keyboard (broken joystick) and I know it can be done. I have adjsuted the sensitivity and practiced about 3 hours or so in empty servers. I just cannot seem to get this right.

I would like some advice. Feel free to flame me for being a noob, but I have done my homework and tried some attempts. The most embarrasing and frustrating part of this is that I AM a pilot. If I can learn to fly a real aircraft in 30 hours certainly I should be able to fly on a game. I've never had trouble with any flight game other than this one.

My primary problem is that my plane stalls at around 400kts. I spent about 30min tapping the W key and balancing the plane to see how slowly I could fly without crashing. 400kts was about the break point. Secondly I cannot seem to turn around within the confines of the map. It takes me the full map to turn around. I can fly the Gulf of Oman in a circle strafing both airfields, but I cannot seem to turn tight enough to hit the beachfront and then loop back towards the carrier. It just wont do it.

I can fly helicopters with no problem. I'm not nearly as good as a lot of people, but that's life. Any advice would be great. For those that feel the urge to point and laugh I can take it.

Get a decent gamepad or joystick will help, you're only as good as the tools you have to work with, as they say

First, your problem seems to be your mouse? The wide turn radius is somethat odd. I hope that youre not using only rudders for turning, because that would be strange and useless.

Just in case, if youre not familiar with flight dynamics. In turns, heres what you want to do. Roll the plane to about 70-80 degrees and "pull up" as much as you can, and apply rudder.

Heres how its done- mouse to "left" or "right" until the planes one wing is pointed to the sky and another to the ground. Then, you "pull" your mouse to make the jets nose pull up. Apply rudder to keep the jet following the horizon (aka keep it balanced). Apply afterburner to make the turn faster, BUT in order to keep the turn as small as possible, you have to keep your speed low.

Keeping your plane at max speed is simple, just hold W key.

Adjust your mouse to your optimum settings. Start with very high and move down. I dont remember where I started, but I guess it was somewhere at 3?

You can also fly with keyboard only, but that makes you good only at bombing.

Remember, using mouse, theres 2 ways to turn. With standard mode- "pushing the mouse up, the plane pulls up", or inverted "pushing the mouse up, the plane pulls down".

If youve dont it right, you should be able to maintan a turn radius that allows you to fly around the carriers main tower. Thats right, the turn circle is that small.

Now to the practice: I suggest you start bombing the choppers and jets on the carrier. What will that accomplish?

First: Its easier to maneuver and orientate yourself to the carrier from the land.
Second: Since youre going to be too busy focusing on the bombing, your subconsciousness will take care of learning to fly. Youll notice this.
Third: Wide targeting area will give you a feedback. Choppers smoking means- you got the targets.

How to bomb?
3 options.
1) Divebomb, which will take some practice. Gain altitude, to about 400-500 feet and dive, at about 80 degrees. Release the bombs when the HUD vertical stripes tip is on the desired target.
2) Horisontal bombing at maximum speed (around 900)
Fly over the target, release when target is just on the tip of the horizontal line. I suggest you ascend a little, at 10-20 degrees, to get a bigger chance of a hit. Notice that the second bomb will pass, fly over about 30-40 feet.
3) Horizontal precision bombing. Same as above, but is more precise. Theres a user who posted a longer video about this, with a tutorial and a picture. Im posting his pic up, modified for 2 and 3.
Its basically the same as bombing 2, but your speed must be around 600 KPH.

I really want to give that user the credit, but I dont know his name.



The box above is where the target should be at about 900 KPH, the box below is where the target should be at 600 KPH. Note, with 600 KPH youll get very good hits.

What concerns dogfighting, its a totally different area.

please do not fly jets till you get a joystick
you will only get frustrated
helo is ok with MOuse and KB
even a $30 joystick will do fine
(eg saitek st90 pr0)

Replace your busted joystick.

Keyboard only or mouse and keyboard will frustrate you to no end. I tried it for awhile and said "screw it". Bought a Saitek and flying is simple now. Doesn't mean I can dogfight worth a damn, but if I'm just screwing around by myself, I can maneuver the plane in and around all sorts of stuff. Control is tight and easy.

Bombing runs became much easier, but I still need to work on my A2A tactics. I typically stay on the ground though.

Wow...thanks for all of the replies. I am quite familiar with aircraft dynamics (as stated I am a pilot) and gauging from what everyone is saying I have to assume that I have a setting somewhere that is out of whack. I started with my sensitivity at 3 and am currently at 5. I tried going higher but everything was really jittery. I guess I'm just going to have to buy another stick.

Judging from what everyone is saying, do you all fly at full throttle the vast majority of the time or am I mistaken?

I fly at full throttle, and use afterburners as much as possible. But, i'm experienced and know where to aim (the weak points of vehicles, and how much to lead... etc.. for that speed I fly at). I typically fly around 1,300mph.


Oh... and, IMO don't fly until you get a joystick. Make sure it has rudder control.

A good cheap joystick is the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. That's what i've been using since my FF microsoft sidewinder 2 joystick broke.

Go get the joystick Logitech extreme 3d pro, buy the warranty program if your close to a bestbuy. Once you wear it out, return it to get a new one! If your a real pilot, i can't believe you would fly without a joystick?

I fly at full throttle, and use afterburners as much as possible. But, i'm experienced and know where to aim (the weak points of vehicles, and how much to lead... etc.. for that speed I fly at). I typically fly around 1,300mph.

Wow, am I the only one who is completely worthless in a plane when I use a joystick? I'm a really good pilot (chek my stats) and I've always used mouse/keyboard but I've been constantly hearing people saying "oh get a joystick, you'll be 10 times better" ya so I went and bought a Saitek Evo, just for kicks and to see if I would really get better (I don't need it though), so I try it and its freakin worthless, like on a bombing run, move the stick a bit and the plane if off target, it's too hard, with a mouse you can easily do small adjustment by barely moving the mouse. I've been practicing for 3+ days on the joystick but it just won't work like my trusty mouse/keyboard. Seriously I cant seem to understand why people advice for joysticks, it just doesn't work for me I guess.

joysticks make flying helis harder for me so just use it for jets.....bascailly if someones on ur tail..fly straight up and then down or something crazy to lose him...in this game.AA kills pretty badly so use flares "x"

I've been practicing on an empty server at the Gulf of Oman since my last post. I turned all of the sensitivity, pitch, and yaw to level 10. If I make a pass over the carrier in a JSF and bank 80-90 degrees left and pull back as hard as I possibly can (at any speed with or without afterburner) I can get turned around in time to see the construction yard. I have to keep this turn going in order to get back to the carrier or else I end up out of bounds behind the carrier. I exited the game and went into my windows settings to change my mouse sensitivity. I had it set to about 80% fast. I turned it wide open as sensitive as it would go. I can't tell much difference in the game. Im using a Logitech MX 700 for anyone wondering.

Long story short I'm going to have to go with a stick.

I have both a setups. Yet, I prefer the Mouse and Keyboard. It's much easier to use the cannons with the mouse in my personal opinion.

Although, a Joystick does allow you to hold your turns easier. I generally have to reset twice with the mouse to pull a full 360. So, it's all a matter of preference.

In regards to dogfighting though, one thing that always works for me is to take the path most aren't willing to take. Fly through towers, under bridges, trough forest, around things... most people won't chase you there. Not to mention it's seriously a rush. Once you get behind someone though, just down the Radar and use your cannons. It's better for them to think you don't exist.
