Free Firewall,Virus Scan software
Just recently my McAfee Security Center subscription expired (came free with the comp) and i dont feel like going out and spending money when i can get an alternative for free. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good free firewall and virusscan that i could download.

Do you have a hardware firewall (router) out in front of your system? If so, you can ditch the software firewall. With a properly configured router and basic internet discipline you can get by without either a software firewall or antivirus.
I've heard people speak highly of the free AVG antivirus, but haven't used it myself. For firewalls, the free Zone Alarm is ok. -

A cable modem? No that is not what I mean by a router. I have DSL (fixed IP address) which feeds into a wireless router (desktop is plugged directly into the router via cable). Then you open up only the bare minimum number of inbound and outbound ports. The desktop then uses an internally addressed ip (DHCP or fixed) which you port forward to from the router. That way your desktop is not directly reachable via the internet. Everything comes through the ports you allow.Originally posted by =KamekaziB-rad=Comment

I used Zonelabs & that worked really well until I bought the bain of my like- a Zyxel Prestige 661HW-61 router.
Conspiracy theorists say that there are some nasties embedded in the code, but if you wear a tin pot over your head you will be fine. ZL was really easy to use & I upgraded to the Pro edition because I was so impressed by itComment

If you have roadrunner, you get free anitvirus and firewall thats really good. It costs like $100 in stores.Comment
