    Planetside has free option

    Greetings all,

I thought some players here might like to know that Planetside has a free option now (called the reserves.)

This allows you to play PS up to level 7 IIRC for a year.

PS is a sci-fi MMOFPS, and allows fairly large battles (up to 500 in each huge zone.)

Pretty good fun for free :-)

      Hiya,

      Whoops, here it is :

PS is not quite as advanced as BF2 of course, but it has some interesting features - such as MAXes, which are like small Mechs or powered battle armour, and engineers who can place MG turrets among other things.

What I like is the large battles - sometimes there can be 100s of people in 1 battle.

The teamplay can be quite good if you get in a large platoon - dropping 30 attackers onto a base is huge fun.

Hope to see some of you there - I like free games :-)

(There will be a large download to start with.)

hmm... lots of people = similar to firing sniper rounds into a mob...

I'll give it a try (hey, can't go wrong, it's free right? (Please correct me if I'm wrong, lol))

          Re: Planetside has free option

          Hiya,

I certainly think it's worth a try - especially if you get in with a good platoon and a big Outfit (platoon = up to 30, 3 squads of up to 10; Outfit = Clan.)

It's been around for longer than BF2, and I find the teamplay has developed more - e.g. over time new group tactics emerge.

Also, I find the Devs are fairly active - they respond to the players a bit more, and the game has new features at fairly regular intervals.

Worth a look (especially for us freebies ;-)

A few notes for those who are interested :

There are 3 servers - US west, US east, Europe. Hit prediction is CLIENT side - generally this works quite well (if you hit someone, he IS hit - but sometimes if you think they missed, you die anyway - works OK for me from 300ms ping.)

You progress thru levels - the free version is only level 7 max. Each level you get a Certification Point (starting with 3.)
Different Armour and Vehicles cost cert points to use - better items cost more. So at higher levels, you can have several choices of armour and vehicles. Free version will mean you only get 1 or 2 practical options, it costs 24 hours to change certs. But level 7 is reachable in only a few days solid play anyway, and you could have several chars.

There are 3 teams with slightly different weapons - generally balance is good (i.e. every team thinks THEY are the weakest :-)

There is plenty of scope for players who don't just want to kill - support vehicles, engineers, medics, hackers with invisible suits (quite fun for those who like knife work.)

And - you can play a female :-)
Woohoo - makes no differences, but hey...

Wrong forum, no advertising. Not trying to be a mini-mod, but it's just the rules.

I wanted to play it a long time ago, but didn't want to pay monthly. Now it is dead, and they are desperate for players....look at what they're doing.

Everyone should go try it out - Planetside is a really innovative game that does a lot of things much better than BF2. This is a great chance for a free comparison.

                      Greetings all,

Fair comment W, I guess the mods will move this if it's in the wrong place - of course, I mention BF2 to my PS and EQ friends too :-)

I would say PS is less "dead and/or dieing" than most games of it's age - the Devs make additions fairly often, and the teamplay is quite good compared to most.

One more tip for those trying PS out -

When you start a char, you get experience points the first time you use any equipment.

                      So,
it's a good idea to go to the TRAINING shed and equip every single weapon, and then every vehicle (and each vehicle weapon) - that way you will be level 4 in a few minutes.

Then go to the main building in Sanctuary, open the Certification terminal and UN-CERTIFY everything (you can do this freely for the first 7 days.)
That way, you will have 10 cert points to spend at the start - enough to get a fair equipment or vehicle set.

Then, to get started - hop on the HART (the vehicle that drops you into battle from space) use the Map, and turn on Global Population (a toggle) - that will show you where the main battle is (usually there is one main battle, maybe 2, at any given time.)

Its a good idea to join a squad - often you will get an invite fairly quickly - or you can say "LFS", or use the squad window to find and join a squad yourself.

                      Have fun :-)

Massivly Multiplayer Online Really Pathetic Gameplay

morpegs are for people with no tactical skill whatsoever, the only one that i would even attempt is apb because its being made by the guys who made the original gta.

                              Greetings again,

                              roger -
                              you are mistaken.

There are tactical skills involved in PS - e.g. holding of important bridges, smart use of engineering equipment, sequence of attacking towers and bases, using the right weapons at the right time and place, co-ordinating MAX crashes and tower drops of 50 people.

You are welcome not to play PS - but please don't make un-informed criticism. Note that PS is certainly not an MMORPG if that's what you meant.

                              zuiqan -
I think you'll like it - hope to see you in game :-)
