overclocking?

im kinda new to the world of computers and pc gaming and im still learning
stuff, but one thing i dont get is overclocking . people talk about it but
im not sure if its good or bad to have that.thx

Oh its a good thing! If you have an amd processor that is.. I have a AMD 3700 stock @ 2200 mhz and overclock'd to 2715 mhz and running smooth.

Overclocking increases performance, but also ups the heat and power needed.

It's also great fun to eek out the best performance possible. :)

Mild overclocking is okay, but when you start getting too wild it can cost a lot of money to keep the heat down and buy new processors when they asplode

to start either get a DFI or ASUS motherboard along with an AMD processor the 3700 is a beast to overclock and rather cheap ...

For basic overclocking lots of money isn't necessary, and for mild overclcoks a specialized motherboard is not needed.

Here is a good guide that should get you started, assuming you have an A64.

Like this...i'm just running a zalman all copper heatsink with a 120mm fan, for now.. which this set up keeps me running at 40c at full load(BF2 running , xfire, antivirus, firewall & outlook). Which in the near future I will be running a full water cooling system by "koolance"
