    game.lockFps [framerate]

Does anyone know exactly what this command does?

    game.lockFps [framerate]

I read that it adjusts the max framerate, I read someplace else that it is defaulted to 100FPS and that you can max it up to 300. But does this actually help your FPS in any way if you mess with this command? And do you have to do it everytime you start BF2?

    Thanks

I wouldnt' think so. Your eye can detect only 30 FPS at best.

If you are prone to Motion sickness the higher the frame rate the more easily you will start feeling ill after playing for a while.
Some people 'cap' their frame rate so it doesn't effect them that much.

I cannot honestly see how you can "lock" your frame rate at a higher value than your setup can handle. If you're system maxes at around 100 FPS...how can it be 'set' to 300? Makes no sense.

That just locks the maximum FPS, it won't let it go above 100, it doesn't lock it at 100.

teh_pwner_of_noobs~not quite, the eye can tell a diffrence. More like 72.

I guess your just smarter than all the doctors and professionals that say otherwise aren't you....

Then why when you set a CRT's refresh rate to 60Hz (60 cycles pers second, same as 60fps), you can still see the flicker of the screen refreshing...

As lil_jimmy_norton has already mentioned, the fps in BF2 is maxed at 100. In other games, locking the fps at a particular number, for instance 60fps, can prevent stuttering, smooth out a game and lower the load on your graphics card. Whether this works in BF2 I don't know as I've not felt the necessity to try it.

Regarding video games especially, this is a popular misconception.
This article explains the science a little better than I can...

You can detect the difference between 30 and 60 fps quite clearly when you play BF2. Try it on LAN server with game.lockfps 30 and game.lockfps 60 and look around.

Well, you would NOT want to have your frames higher than your refresh rate. Running at 100 FPS when your refresh rate is like 60 75 or 80 will cause tearing (when the ground and textures start to **** up) so maxing it out might cause this tearing.

The higher the refresh rate the better the performance, they say you cant detect anything over 30fps, but it stops being fluid under 60fps, so you want at least 60fps for it to run fluid, and monitors televisions etc are flicker free at 100htz, i run mine on 100htz when possible.

I just played a couple of hours of Euro Force with game.lockfps 75 (My 19" 8ms monitor's resolution is 1280x1024@75hz. I regularly hit 90-100fps with my oc'ed A64 3200+, 6800GT & 2GB RAM). The game was very smooth. Objectively speaking, I don't know if there was any real performance gain, but there definitely wasn't a decrease. Worth a try if you have a mid range PC/Gfx card.

Where did you hear that? You really can't tell the difference between 30 and 60fps? It's like night and day.

We can probably see frame rates up in the 300s if we had a monitor that could display that. Even at 60, a really fast moving object won't appear smooth.

I wonder what fps life is.
