Artifacts and 7900 GTX

Hey guys,

I recently picked up an XFX 7900 GTX, overclocked from the factory to 675/1700 mhz.


Well, at XFX speeds I have weird artifacting that appears after a while. It's generally in the 2d menu, where square artifacts start to appear. It looks like this:

Occasionally, I get tearing similiar to typical artifacting.

The only solution so far is to lower the memory clock speed to 840 or 1680 DDR.

Likewise, the problem only really occurs in battlefield 2. I've played Half Life 2, and other games with the memory at even faster speeds, and nothing happens there.

So this leads me to believe this is an issue with BF2.

Any ideas?

well Bf2 seem sot artifact before any other game, but yeah that seems to be it. are you using the newest drivers? and yes, what are your temperatures? You may just have to clock it down to the stock settings of a normal 7900gtx. this happened with older xfx 7800gt's.

Very likely a temperature issue. I've got a pair of 7800's and would get the same tearing (and some lag) when I overclocked them. It would occur after playing for awhile and when I'd check temps they were getting high. Never had the same issues in HL2, but that's an apples to oranges comparison. Different engine. I've seen the same issues in Star Wars Battlefront 2 when OC'd and that uses a flavor of the BF engine. Turn down your OC or add cooling and I'll bet the issue goes away.

A number of 7900 series cards from different manufacturers are showing this. I personally would RMA the card and get a replacement. Reports are that it is isolated to individual units.

Temperature isn't an issue, becuase I have excellent case flow, and relatively cold room temperatures. Load temps are on the card don't go past 58C or so.

The BIG issue I have here, is the card is rated to run by XFX at 675/1700 with the cooling they issued. Yet it doesn't. I shouldn't have to underclock the card, or add more cooling.

As Betageek mentioned, it seems to be a common problem with the higher clocked 7900 GTX cards, and especially Battlefield 2.

I was mostly wondering if someone knew of a software related fixed. I'm using the newest drivers, and I'm going to assuming Nvidia won't attempt to fix the problem since the clocks are past reference.

Other problem is I can't RMA it, because every place is out of stock. I generally prefer Nvidia over ATI for the shear fact that I hate ATI drivers, but at this point I might return it and get an 1900 XTX.

Your link is dead. The problem you describe is a defective GPU. RMA the card, sorry you're having problems.

btw .. i was looking at ur pic and it looks like ur playing on low terriain or something (maybe its just me) cuz the ground in ur pic looks blurry and stuff

Everything is maxed actually.

I'd RMA it, but what am I going to do in the meantime, with no 7900 GTX in stock.

I could go with the 1900 XTX, but I've had bad experiences with ATI drivers, and especially dual monitor support.

Should I just RMA it and go with the 1900 XTX?

I'd go for it. I've never had a problem with ATI drivers, and I've used a 9800 Pro, X800 Pro, X850 XT, X1800 XL, X1900 XT and I've never had to roll back drivers or anything. What was the last ATI card you had and driver version?

Been running Nvidia forever. I now have a X1900XTX. I am not an ATI fan but I must admit, I did have issues with BF2 and my 7800GTX, but now with my X1900XTX I have none. This card is stable as a rock and is very fast. With that being said, those who tout ATI's image quality, are stuck in the past. I've been running Nvidia for a long time, and my most recient cards were the 6800 Ultra and 7800 GTX. IMO, these two cards provided slightly better overall image quality then my X1900XTX (but its very close). I'm running a NEC 22" FE2111sb monitor so trust me I have a monitor to tell the difference. Still the X1900XTX is an awsome card and ATI drivers seem every bit as good as Nvidia's, however the CCC totoally sucks as its bloated and slow.
