Will I need to have the 64 bit version of windows for it to run?

You will need a 64 bit OS if you plan to use the CPU's 64 bit proccessing power. Can I just use my 32 bit version of windows?
Yes but your CPU will only run at 32bit
x64 Windows rocks I will never go back to x32. I've had 4 boxes with x32 XP in my experiance it was allways flaky & requires consant REBOOTS to keep run'n smooth. My Winx64 box is very stable (BF2 has never I repeat never crashed on it) & fast it never slows down & does needs to be rebooted like x32 XP. BUT I have allways built my own boxes & have a good understanding of hardware. The only problems I've had have been with stupid program installers that check OS versions.
Allthough I do NOT recomend x64 for the average user, its really an OS for advanced users. Microsoft understands this and thats why they dont push it.
Win x64 is a stripped down version of Server 2003 x64 and uses the same memory manager.
x64 can handle 128 gig physical & 16 terabites of virtual memory & can run progams in all of the physical paging only when necissary.
x32 can handle 4 gig physical (with right config)& up to 4 gig virtual (total 4gig) but can only use 2 gig for running programs & even with 4 gig it will page ot the other 2 gig.
There is a private group working on try'n to dupliacte what Microsoft did stripping down Server 2003 x64 with Server 2003 x32 allthough they still have some bugs to work out it is reported to allso be more stable and faster than regular XP x32 because it uses the Server memory manager.
XP x32 will be remembered as a crappy OS mark my words.

There is nothing in X64 windows that needs someone to be an "advanced" user.
It certainly isnt something a typical internet browser/word processing person needs to invest in yet, but there is nothing about it that makes it impossible for your average PC person to utilize. Especially considering 90% of everything on X64 XP is still running in 32-bit mode.
