    7800gs Bs

Something has gone with my 7800GS BFG card. First my short cuts take forever to load when I turn the PC on and now BF2 will not start. When I hit the shortcut it just goes back to desk top. Everything worked fine for about 2 weeks. I'm going to throw my 6800GT back in and see if **** works. Any thoughts?

Yeah, probably not the card, its sounds like you have something eating your system resources.

Yeah I don't think that would have anything to do with the card. I got a 7800 GS and works great. No complaints at all. I would recommend running a virus/spyware scan, and try cleaning out your msconfig. If you are just "throwing in" graphics cards, it might be reading the configuration for the 6800 and not the 7800 itself. Make sure you uninstalled the previous drivers before installing the 7800 GS?

hmm, uninstall drivers (and when it asks if you wanna uninstall the nview profiles hit YES),driver cleaner it. reinstall drivers. try again. if it still doesnt work. re-patch it and try one more time.
o yes, and probably update direct x 9, as said below me.
if THAT doesnt work come back.

                  Re: 7800gs Bs

I had the exact same problem with my 7800GS. Your card is fine more than likely. If your other games are working, than its not the card.

For me, BF2 did the exact same thing. It would start up, screen goes black, then flips back to the desktop. I had this same problem once before and BF2 killed my CSS installation. Why? Well when you install BF2, it forces you to also intall DX9. If you say "no", it cancels the whole install. So what was happening was that it was fubaring my DX9 config, even tho in dxdiag it said it was fine.

Once I reinstalled DX9 (Dec-2005 ver.), BF2, CSS, DoDS, everything worked great. Although I did seem to have to install the latest patch before I could get it to work. Not sure why.

But try that. Your card is fine I'm sure.

As far as BF2 acting sluggish, I had this problem too. I had some issues with my hard-drive read-writes and it was affecting my virtual memory. BF2 likes virtual memory a LOT, esp with just a GB of ram. I reinstalled windows (ugh, I know), but it fixed my v. mem and now everything is great! The 7800GS just doesn't care what you want it to do. In single player mode, I was running 16x12 w? 4xFSAA and was STILL getting 60-70 fps. Although I run it in 12x10 bc my monitor is just 17" (I wanted the 7800GS more than an LCD, so sue me).

I rolled back my pc about 3weeks and reinstalled the video driver. The game is running again however Short cuts are still taking 3-4min to pop-up at startup. So I should reinstall dirext-X9c correct?

rollbacks can cause all sorts of probs, as its reverting back to when something may have been removed & its trying to locate it.

Do a clean install of windows.

You're not going to make him a very happy person. However, you are probably correct.

When windows starts acting funny (+2 minutes for icons to show up), then it's time for a reformat.

                          Re: 7800gs Bs

Yeah that wasn't my first choice. But for my problem it was easily the fastest solution, and now windows boots in like 30 sec so it easily pays off.

I dont think DX9 is going to fix the lag you are expierencing. Thats an OS issue. Is your drive heavily fragmented? Could try reinstalling the game. One technique you could try is to defrag your swap file. To do this, you must first delete your swap (set to zero), and restart. Then defrag the partition the swap was on. Then reset the swap back on to a fixed amount (like min 2GB, max 2GB). This will keep it from getting fragmented in the future.

But to do all that is probably equal in time and effort to reinstalling. I think kwindows has a feature now where it'll back up your setting to transport to a new copy of windows. You might try looking into that if you reformat.

Honestly, I was surprised when I reformated. I just have a small 40GB partitoin for my OS, and all my games are on another. I had just 10GB free before the format. I went through everything to see what I needed and I only ended up saving about 1.5 GB. That's it. So I cut down on some major bloat.

You'll probably only need your "Documents and Settings", and only a small portion of that. But it's good to save all of it in case you forget about some settings from a prog or something. All the rest of your progs can ussually get reinstalled easily.

Okay thats my rant. Good luck!

EDIT: When icons take forever to pop-up, it ussually means there are lots of start-up progs the desktop is waiting on. To look at all your startup files, type "MSCONFIG" in the cmd line in the startbar.

Then goto this link for more info: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/

That might take care of your problem. Uninstall or delete any progs you dont want or need. Then run a registry cleaner to delete the entrys that dont have parents (since you deleted the file it belongs to).

But even after all that, since the registry doesn't get smaller after you make deletions to it, it will still take a long time for the OS to boot. In the end, you just might want to reformat after all.

                          Hope that helps.
