Now, I had no problems with 1.2. Could play for hours.
But shortly after 1.21 patch installed I started getting random freezes and I couldn't get my joystick to work. SO, I uninstalled BF2/SF, checked the registry for lingerers which were none. Checked for other BF2 items, of which were none. Rebooted.
Installed BF2/SF/1.2/1.21 ... again.
Played 5minutes of one game and had a freeze. BF2 still occupying 95% of processor cycles.
End program.
Tried again. Played ~10minutes and froze again. BF2 occupying ~94% of CPU cycles. End program.
Freezes were at different points. Just trotting down a road, end of game, after a death, driving a jeep on open terrain. No one single event seemed to trigger the freezes.
So, at this point I'm thinking re-download 1.21 patch (for it may be corrupted), uninstall, and reinstall again.
But, since I started to have some freezing issues after the install of the 1.2-1.21 patch, I had a thought about shortening the install/re-install process.
Would it be possible to install a vanilla BF2/SF, and then copy the entire folder over to an innocuous folder called.. say.. backup_BF2.
Then if the need to re-install arises again, you could simply delete the contents of the EAGAMES/BF2 folder and replace it from your backup folder. Then re-apply the patches.
Has anyone tried this? And if so, did it work properly?
