How to patch if all else fails

First, thanks to VIRUSSNT for the idea for this fix.

If you have been having trouble patching, namely the "Patching Failed" error, I have a possible solution.

I tried literally everything to fix it, and I could not. This includes the temp folder fix, administrator login, safe mode, remove BF2 from registry before trying again, all sorts of stuff. I was down to changing out DVD drives and trying all sorts of ridiculous things, having spent a weekend and a day working on it. Finally, I found the solution thanks to virussnt.

Basically, it comes down to what appears to be a RAM error. Even though everything else worked perfectly fine for me, my patching failed due to RAM. I use Ultra RAM from tigerdirect, two 512mb sticks at 400 mhz. Well, I had tried the solution presented by virussnt of using only one of the sticks, to see if one was broken--didn't work. I had reseated and made sure the connections were good, the RAM slots clean of dust, with no dice for either stick, seemingly ruling out that as the problem. Then, my brother got some new Corsair RAM, and I was at my wits' end, so I installed one of the sticks of Corsair. Voila, it worked! No problems at all. So, I guess I'll be ordering some new, high quality RAM. Anyway, this is my advice: even if your RAM seems fine, it could still be the problem. Try to get some from a friend, sibling, or different computer if nothing else works.

Thanks to everyone who helped me out earlier, BF2 finally works.

PS: I wasn't sure what forum this goes in... maybe this fix could be quoted in the "How To Uninstall BF2, PB, patches. Install, BF2, 1.03 (patch), PB, Tips & Issues" thread. Sorry if this is considered spam because support is only for questions or something...

Re: How to patch if all else fails

I too have struggled with patching failed problems since the demo, and I have to reinstall the game after about 3-4 days because it starts to have lag problems, modified content errors, cotton bullets, ect. finally this week the game wouldnt run more than 5 minutes before literally disappearing to desktop, but I did manage to see one error message after one crash, "memory.dll:: Chunkpools..." So I finally ran memtest86 on what I thought was premium ram, Crucial ballistix, and found the ram is literally smoked, tons of errors from test#2 onward. looking through hardware forums it appears Ballistix burns itself out quite quickly. off to buy some better memory and maybe enjoy a stable game for once. Good post BTW
