If you download maps, You need to extract it to your EA Folder > Battlefield 2 >Mods > Levels.

Are you thinking that BF2 "vanilla" is a map pack? Vanilla just means plain old BF2, not a map pack. If you have BF2, you have "vanilla". All BF2 (non SF) servers have the "vanilla" maps.
