Manually Updated PB and now I get crazy stuttering

Everything seemed fine but I was trying to squeeze that last little bit out of my system because I did have a little bit of lag. So I updated PB, started using my batch file to run BF2 and open the ports on my firewall. Join a server to see what kind of damage I've done (hoping for the better). Hope in and it's laggy. I'm hoping it'll clear up but I can go maybe 2 steps and lag for 4 So i remove the port settings from my router and ran BF2 from my exe and not the bat file. only thing that did not change was PB I had the same result on a known good server.

PC SPecs:
AMD 64 3000
512x2 1gb Ram GeIL pc3200
Radeon 256MB 9600xt-vio
SATA 150 7200 drive that seems to be running pretty slow. Drive light is solid from the time I connect to a server till almost a full minute after i've joined. Load times are horrible.

Looks like I may just re-install XP but would prefere not to.

I think there's an option you can run from the console ~ to set the amount of time between PunkBuster checks... I'll look around and see if I can find it.

How does this work?

Punkbuster, as you probably know, is the anti cheating software which comes bundled with BF2 and is required to play on all ranked servers and most public servers. Punkbuster scans your hard-drive for problems every 20 seconds. As you may have guessed, this causes a lot of lag. What we are going to do is to increase the amount of time in between punkbuster checks to 500 seconds (the maximum amount so don't try anything higher lol). By the way, in case you were worried, this is 100% safe with punkbuster, and will NOT cause any problems with Punkbuster thinking you are a cheater. Punkbuster even recommends this on their website.

How do you do it?

Step 1: Ok, the first step is very simple, join any BF2 online server which is running punkbuster, preferably a ranked one.

Step 2: Once you are in, and respawned somewhere, press the ` key. This key is located on most keyboards above the tab key and to the left of the 1 key

Step 3: Once you have pressed this, a large white box should drop down with a load of text in it. Type "pb_sleep 500" (without the quotation marks) and hit the enter key

Step 4: Once you have done this, make sure the box is still up and type pb_writecfg to save your settings

Yes I tried that and it gave back a error. but the stuttering is literally 1-2 secs with out and about 5 secs with. Sounds and everything loop.
