I just had a swell idea while playing and I just had to come in here and share so people could tell me that I ought to stop whinging (or whining) and go play Counter-strike.
I'm playing a 40-man server running 64-person maps, but we only have ~10 people per side. It's currently on Daqing Oilfields, which many know as a vehicle-heavy map.
The problem is that with only 16-20 people (total) everyone in the game has a vehicle, be it mobile AA, tank, fighter, bomber, helicopter, or the like. This is a very common gripe with two of the Euro Forces maps, too, because people who enjoy infantry (it is a "joint arms" game, as many of you like to remind us) have almost nothing to do.
There's really no (easy or obvious) way to scale the map size out as players join, but would it make sense if the number of vehicles spawning was related to the number of players playing? It seems like it would. That way, the map designers could ensure that the air:ground:infantry balance always stayed proportional.
As players joined and the server population reached a certain size, additional vehicles would be added at the various flags. If people leave, the extra vehicles would just stay active until destroyed, after which they wouldn't respawn until enough players rejoined.
I have this vague recollection that I've heard this idea somewhere else but I can't pinpoint where, and it might be my mind playing tricks on me - but sorry if this is old hat.
Let me hear you say... vhut?
