    CPU upgrade worth it?

I am looking at possibly going from my current processor (2.4GHz P4 w/ 533MHz FSB, no hyperthreading) to a 3.06GHz P4 533MHz FSB with hyperthreading. Cost would be about $150. Is it worth it?

I use my computer for everything. BF2, schoolwork, movies, encoding video, ripping DVDs, etc.

Its worth it only if you need more performance and cant replace your current system. Price seems a bit high though, for instance a brand new A64 3200+ goes for around $150 or less, and this chip is almost 3-4 years old. Yikes!

Here is one for sale a few months ago for $70

Hell it might still be avaliable!

It might be worth just getting a new socket 775/478 board that supports 800FSB and getting a cheap chip for that. The problem with the 3.06ghz 533 FSB northwood is that it was once top of the line... meaning $$$ and its relatively rare, and the only 533FSB early socket 478 with hyper threading.

Spending for instance $150-200 for a mobo and CPU upgrade might be better than just getting an artificially overpriced rare chip.

He has an Intel cpu not an AMD, getting an A64 would be senseless since he would ahve to buy a whole new mobo...

I'm doing a price comparison. A modern kick ass CPU is $150, where as his 4 year old chip is the same price.
