BF2 runs for 4 seconds, pauses for 11: very methodically

I just built a new system:
    AMD X2 3800+
    2gb Corsair 3200 ram (TWINX2048-3200PT)
Raid 0 Raptor 74 (150gb total drive space)
    Windows XP Pro fully updated
    ATI X1900XT

Currently, everything is stock..no overclocking or anything.

As soon as I load the game, the following occurs: The program will hang (or pause) for 11 seconds, and run for 4 seconds. I say "program" because it does this even on the opening videos! On the main menu, it does the same thing.
During map loading, it still does this very methodical pause/run/pause/run.
And, of course, it does the same thing during game play.

I maxed out the video settings at 1600x1200@60hz.
I've also tried dropping the settings..I still get the same methodical problem.

This doesn't seem to be related to the other "stuttering" and "lag" issues I've seen on here since it occurs even during the opening video.

Any thoughts what this might be? Thanks!

Make sure there is no other background problem running.... Could be a virus.

          Hey folks,

I am having seemingly exactly the same problem. It goes into intermittent pauses. Meaning it plays for about 20 seconds then freezes for 20 seconds. During that time the sound and mouse move (if Im at a menu) but all other graphics freeze. This happens during the game itself and during menus, even during the intro movies from time to time.

It usually plays alright for about 5 minutes off of a cold boot then starts up with the problems. If I have been using the pc a bit, or playing other games it will likely start with the lockups. This even happens on low graphics settings. Ive adjusted fan controls to keep my card cool, turned down acceleration and overclocking off in bios and utilities.

Ive tried the latest ATI Catylst drivers as well as the latest Omega drivers both lead to the same problem.

          specs:
          Win xp pro
          A8r32 MVP M-board
          AMD FX 64 X2 Dual
          2 gigs corsair ram
          Radeon 1900 XTX 512
Vortec Extreme Gamer 600w Power supply

Notes: I have 5 fans in my case, one directly pointed at the GPU another just above it, not counting the fan on the 1900xtx itself.
Its a brand new system just put it together a day or two ago so little in the way of baggage or cookies.. should be pretty clean.
Ive updated Windows until I dont have any more updates to choose, Anti Virus, Catylst drivers, processer driver, motherboard drivers. There dont seem to be any virus or other software conflicts.

All that is installed on the machine are windows, AVG, drivers, Call of Duty2, Battle for Middle Earth 2 and BF2 currently.

Call of Duty 2 / Battle for ME2 run fine without issue for quite a while (havent had either crash or show any sign of problems yet).

I've also read in another post of someone having the same problem with the 1900Xtx card... I hope thats not the issue (although thats what we all have in common). Whats the point of buying high end if it wont work ><

Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

          Thanks!

just give some time to radeon and or omega to solve the problem and submit a driver update, there will be one soon.

gazarelli, i noticed we have the same motherboard. (A8R32-MVP Deluxe)

Update the BIOS to 0311 (it's on Asus' site). Use the Asus Update utility included on the utility CD to install the 0311.ROM file once you've downloaded it.

It cleared everything right up..BF2 runs like gang-busters now.

I just can't believe I didn't think to check for a new BIOS right away

Incidentally, this will solve the same problem for HL2 and COD2.

                Sweet, that seemed to work!

I had used the Asus auto update utility which came with the M-bo, but for whatever reason, it didnt detect any bios updates. The manual patch did the trick!

                Thanks for the tip!
