To be an engy or not..

Whats the deal, why so many people waiting for tanks/apc's and never being an engineer..
Do you have the much faith in crates?

With the abundance of more armor maps Id think more engy's would appear, even on Urban maps which have units of armor.
Now even the AT mine is a dangerous object, be MEC on Karkand and 2 engys can shut down the roads in the front.

Nothing pains me more when I pull up along side a tank/apc friendly and I here my repair ability cranking away, all the while he is doing nothing for me..
Sure a resupply or heal is good if the situation calls for it..but 2-3 engy's tanked up side by side (pop a crate even in there for good measure) are damn invincible from a mutiple AT class attack or opposing armor.

I know theres reasons to pick a diffrent class for driving a tank. 2 top I can think of is the AT pop out and fire a rocket kill technique, ability to pop out and still be viable in CQC.
But to be honest 90% of the time I see this "pop out occur" the player is killed..and usually the tank/apc is left to rot or the enemy picks it up.
I cant count the millions fo times Ive encountered a disgarded tank, Id call for a mate to hop in sit next to him and repair up..or just repair my self and speed away.

I dont think anyone understands the ease and luxury of being able to kick it into reverse into a safe location, hop out and repair up.

Basically what Im getting at is in my opinion your more useful to be an engy to yourself and your team if you knowingly spawn with intentions of driving a tank/apc.
Youll support friendly armor as well as being able to have the ability to avoid death do to not relying on crates or friendlies.

Id say some people dont plan on using armour when they spawn as support but see it and take advantage, they will probably respawn as engineer when they die to use it again.

The people who constantly use armour without being engineer are probably going for badges or are selfish idiots :p.

I completely agree. I'm always disappointed when I see a tank or APC driving around and there isn't an engineerin inside. If you have two armored vehicles both with engineers driving around together, the other team better have a bunch of AT mines around or a lot of Spec. Ops. with C4. Otherwise they are in for a world of hurt because they will be damn near invinicible.

If I know I'm going to grab a tank I always be an engineer. There are times where I'm support and notice an unused tank where I'll hop in and put it to use, but always if I know I'm grabbing armor I be an engineer. It is frustrating when others don't do the same.

Exactly, and like bluecow said, il grab a tank sometimes if its just sitting there and im not always eng, but if I want to always grab a tank time after time in a server il always spawn as eng.

Re: To be an engy or not..

I love playing as an Engineer. The M11-87 is a fantastic weapon.

Playing in Karkand last night I scored an easy 80 points, comming 4th overall behind a comander and two armour whores.

If it's a nice close up map like Karkand, Sharki or even Mashtur you can kick serious ass with the pump shotgun.

One thing that bugs the hell out of me are armour whores who grab tanks and then run around going "ooh look at what a good engineer I am!" Balls to that. Get out of your metal suit and come fight on foot.

Personally I'd like it if they introduced 3 new classes to the game. A Commander class, a pilot class and a driver class.

This would stop those guys stealing "legit" high scores from others. It's just fun to see your name in yellow on the best payers board, but when you've been running around with grenades, pistol and a shotgun laying mines, and killing troops and this shmuck goes tanking it's a little disheartening. Or being a sniper and getting 25 kills in a round and the commander, who's also a sniper has just been dropping arty scores more.

A tank/APC should have an atomatic "driver" class that removes you from the whatever you spawned as category. They already calssify you as "armour" or "transport" or whatever, so why not leave them that glory and give the PBI something to crow about. Jump out and you can be whatever you are, but it doesn't count towards a "kit" score when in a vehicle.

If you want to repair other vehicles, then the engineer can sit in the gunners position. Enhance teamwork.

Except for the Vodniks and Humvees and FAV's and the like. You can just jump in one of those.

It took me 400 hours playing different kits to start playing engineer recently, and now after like 60 hours being engineer, I can say that this class is awesome. The ability to repair and land mines is very useful, and the little mp7 rocks.

Re: To be an engy or not..

If I'm dedicating myself to armor, I'll usually go Engy, depending on the map / etc.. sometimes I'll go AT as well....

But there are times when I'll join a server, or will be selecting a spawn point, and notice armor sitting in our spawn unused. I've played too many rounds on Karkand, being raped by 3-4 pieces of armor all belonging to the other team (since they stole it) to let something go unused. If that happens, I'll usually be the wrong kit, but will change after a death if I'm going to keep using the armor..

Yeah most people dont plan to take a tank until its right there in front of them for the taking. Engineer sucks majorly for pvp. So unless you really want to be like the heli and plane whores who simply camp on the helipad and runway waiting for a change to yank the vehicle from other would be drivers, you are going to choose assault or support or medic and join in the battle like the rest of us.

I'd use the Engy kit a helluva lot more if you could drop toolkits to repair vehicles as they drive over them just like medics and support people can with first aid and ammo =/

I agree. If you could drop a "bag of fix" and get repair points at a faster rate, I'd be engr more. The pump shotgun is death on a stick, but the repair points just come too damned slowly.

Finally some people with brains! I can't even count the amount of times I've seen some numbnuts medic steal the tank I've patiently been waiting for (as an engineer btw, check my profile on bf2s) then proceed to use it as a transport. Yes, thanks dickhead, ignore the humvee and DPV beside you, steal the tank from the lone engineer trying to help his team

omg, where have you been all my life....this particular scenario puts me in a whole new realm of ****ed, especially when the UBER NOOBER goes and runs in the middle of the last enemy flag BY HIMSELF, with no support whatsoever, gets swarmed by 7 of every class in the game, freaks out and bails, dies, then ive got me a really big gun pointed at my face. i didnt really use the engy kit that much untill i unlocked the MP7. i dont like getting up close and personal with anyone when i havea low rate of fire. but i agree with everyone when they say that engies are ideal for preventing armor from reaching key locations. if your on Wake Island 2007. plant an AT mine in the middle of the road, then stagger your remaining mines in a "U" shape in the grass off to the side of the road, the tanker will think e is avoiding a lone mine when in fact hes rolling right into your clever little trap!!
