Server Issues?

Ok, so I've been playing BF2 (Without any expansions) and lately it hasn't been easy to find a server with anyone playing. I checked my search filter, and it's totally clear and searching for EVERYTHING! What's the deal? I know people are playing but why in the hell can't I find a server? Is it because I don't have any expansions or something? That would be dumb if that was the reason. Help me out.
