I hate SF. The idea is good but the maps suck. Hardly ever play it

When I first tried SF I did not know the maps and thus was owned badly. But I kept trying them and found that these maps are the bomb. Well at least the day maps are excluding Iron Gator. Mass Destruction, Ghost Town, Warlord, Surge are all great fun.

SF is played less because it's not strictly an expansion, rather a stand alone product. Only those whom the content appealed to and wished to pay for a stand alone product bought it and some of those people didn't like it for the reasons below. Hence less players and only a relatively small number of servers to cater for those people.
The only other issues I can think of is the night maps and performance. Of those who bought the game, a proportion don't like night maps (I do). Regarding performance, the BF2 engine cannot cope with indoor combat on multiple levels and 64 players in a comparatively small map area, so on a couple of maps performance suffers. For those with reasonably high spec PCs, this isn't a major issue, simply turn down dynamic shadows and dynamic lighting a notch (worked for me). For the rest, this performance loss compared to vanilla BF2 is a major issue.
If SF had been a booster pack, rather than a psuedo stand alone product, I've no doubt it would've been a great deal more popular.

Haven't had any performance issues since the latest patch. Works pretty darn good actually. Don't play night maps. Plenty of day only servers.

Re: Why Is Sf Less Played Then Bf2

I play more SF than vanilla. I like the action better in the day maps.

I dont play the night maps cause the green gives me a headache. To many years running tracking screens on the USMC HAWK missle systems. They finally replaced the green screens with color, but just as I was leaving the service....figures. lol

                Just a FYI:

green is easier on a womens eyes

orange is easier on a mans eyes

This was from a study in the late 70's and a lot of US military tracking screens for combat units were changed from green to orange displays. That was when the combat units were men only though.

I play SF a lot as well, i dont experience any performance issues are whatever and i think the night maps are fun, but my favorite maps are Ghost Town and WarLord.

I really can always find a full server so really....its all good

SF sucks, i only have it for the cool unlocks in vanilla bf2... G36E > *

It's the horrible lag, low fps and boring, crappy maps that have made me not even bother to reinstall SF after i just reformated my drive a week ago.

I like SF, but I too have not reinstalled it since I wiped my drive.

Theres only like.. 2 servers running the damn game in all of NZ.. and they're both empty. I bet if I lived in America I could play SF more often, and probably wouldnt look back to spammy bf2.

Re: Why Is Sf Less Played Then Bf2

I just got SF. I dont play it because:

                        1. The maps were not a whole lot different than BF2 maps.

                        2. With Tanks, UAV and other "non" tactical type weaponry, it didnt seem a whole lot different to BF2 .. and certainly not "special forces" style. I was immediately turned off. The only redeeming thing I liked about the map I played was a useable "pick up truck" that DID look non-descript and perfect for a spec-ops operation.

                        3. The zip line was not a necessary item and did not come in handy that often.

                        4. Players did *not* play in squads or with teamwork any more than my regular BF2 servers.

In the end, I quit playing the SF maps after 2 nights because they just didnt feel "spec-ops" (read Splinter Cell).

Re: Why Is Sf Less Played Then Bf2

One trend i notice is that since Euroforce came out, some SF servers have switched to Euroforce servers.

I think this is because you can get more participants since the server can play both BF2 and Euro maps. While SF maps can only be played on SF servers.

What i dont like about EA is the fact that they isolated SF. You cant mix SF and BF2 maps without restarting the applications each time. While BF2 and Euroforce maps can be played back to back without application restarts.

I wonder why they did this?
