Configuration Help for Newb Pilot

I have 140+ hours of BF2 under my belt. I decided it was time to give helicopter piloting a shot. So I bought a Logitech joystick.

Well, I'm finding heli piloting to be difficult. I am asking for some help. I'd like to know how do you have your controls configured? Which axes do you use for pitch, yaw or roll? Do you use just the joystick? a combination of stick and keyboard? stick and mouse?

Does the throttle controls the altitude of the heli? Do you have to pitch forward for forward momentum?

Yeah, I'm bracing for the "n00b" taunts.

I actually find it is a lot easier to fly the helo with the mouse and keyboard then with a joystick. i use the logitech extreme pro for flying the plane, but the keyboard and mouse for helo.

I agree, the mouse and keyboard is fine for the helos.

The problem with joystick is, that it will make you choose your flight pattern and "level" the flight more often, making you a perfect target for AA and other nasty stuff. However, Ive found that keeping a good level flight, hovering and just have that "flight feel" is unmatchable. Mouse and ey are too arcade for my liking.

Heres what I use.
Keyboard and Joystick

WASD is for Acceleration and Yaw.

On the joystick, I have the trigger for FFARs, other keys for flares and viewpoints. Im also using mouselook binded to joystick axis´.

Now. I set the throttle on the joystick to either very slow descent, perfect hover or very slow accent. I even used a knife to make small markings on the joystick for faster set of throttle. So I can hover with no attention on the throttle, and since I use A D for yaw, I can quickly speed up aswell.

If you havn't got it already.Joystick sucks for helicopters.
Mouse and keyboard all the way.

Jets are another matter.You didn't buy your joystick for nothing.

I agree whole heartily with the guys here. Get a joystick but dont get it for helos. Get it for planes. Mouse and keys are ten times better for helos.

Do you guys still suggest kb/m for helos? I've been trying to use my new flight stick and adjusting the settings but it's still tough to fly helos. No prob on planes.

Yes...keyboard and mouse for choppers. :)
