i cant get it because the downloader only works on 2000....how bent is that??

It's not really. BF2 only works on XP.
True, you can play BF2 on W2000 but it isn't supported and EA are right to save themselves a lot of hassle by letting W2000 users download and play and then complain about it when it doesn't work properly.
In saying that, download this and it should solve your problem.
It's the EA Downloader.
