    BF2 Graphical Oddity

So you'll have to excuse me if this has been adressed elsewhere, but I couldn't find any threads that matched what it is I'm experiencing. Consistently, on Sharqi Peninsula, if I go up onto the top of the Construction Site, on the side with the flag, and I go over to where the beam crosses to the other side and look towards the crane, I get this giant black mountain that takes up most of my screen.

I'm using the latest CAT's and I'm updated to 1.21, though this has been happening for as long as I can remember having the game.

Similar to this, on seemingly any given map I also get these weird flickering textures that go back and forth between black and their normal texture. This seems to occur more specifically when a weapon is being fired. This led me to believe that maybe it is associated with dynamic lighting, what with the muzzle flash affecting the surrounding area; however, even after turning off dynamic lighting (with which I play on LOW) the flickering remained. I have seen a few other posts about this on other forums, but I have yet to find a sufficient solution. Here are my specs:

    ABIT NF7-S2G
AMD Athlon 2600+ Barton (OC'd to 3200+) [NOTE: this problem also occurred before I overclocked.]
1GB (2x512) Corsair Value RAM in Dual-Channel [NOTE: problem also occurred before I was using this RAM or Dual-Channel ram at all]
    Radeon 9700Pro 128mb AGP8x
    Creative Audigy2
    160gb Maxtor Ultra ATA 7200rpm

If anyone has any ideas, I would greatly appreciate the input. As of right now I'm just dealing with the problem, but as you can imagine from the above pictures it can be kind of difficult to tell who's shooting at you from where when they are enveleoped by a mountain of blackness.

    Thanks in advance,

    SP

So you get this only when going to the top of the consturction cite in Sharqi Peninusla? Does it happen anywhere else?

Make sure your AGP Aperture size is 128mb not 256 because when I change mine to 256 with my 128mb card I get the exact same thing, not sure if it will help you but it works for me.

I would say go back to 6.2 drivers if you can.. I started having problems like that until i switched back to 6.2 drivers then all is well. So i would try to switch back. but if you dont want to then i dont know what to say.. Good Luck

I had a few of the same issues. Uninstall all your graphics drivers, reboot and then reinstall them. Maybe try reinstalling 1.21 again as well.
I finally got things back up and running right last night.

The 'mountain' that you see above only happens on Sharqi. However, as I noted in my post, the same sort of flat black texture appears in other levels as well though not nearly as exaggerated.

Aha. My AGP Aperture size is currently set to 512. I'll try turning it down to 128 and post my results. Thanks for the input!

The thing is, I've had this problem for as long as I've had BF2, which goes back to the 5.x drivers as well. No driver updates seem to have fixed this problem, nor have any updates to the game changed it.

Thanks everyone for responding, I will get back and hopefully have some good news. :)

                  Glad you asked.

                  I have been running with:

                  Terrain: Low
                  Effects: Medium
                  Geometry: Medium
                  Textures: Low
                  Lighting: Low
                  Dynamic Shadows: Off
                  Dynamic Lighting: Low
                  Anti-Aliasing: 2x
                  Texture Filtering: Low
                  View Distance: 100%

However, upon your asking I decided to start fooling around with the settings that I wouldn't expect to have an effect such as this. In doing so, I changed Terrain up to Medium. Lo and behold, the mountain has vanished. Hurrah! Now hopefully others who may have run into this problem (though they seem to be few and far between) can find this post and find my solution.

Thanks everyone posted, your input was much appreciated!

I have this same problem on my NVIDIA 5900 Ultra with Terrain on Low. I guess it is not just an NVIDIA or ATI problem, but a BF2 issue.

Yes Medium works, but is there any way to get Low Terrain to work? Trying t squeeze every FPS I can out of system till I build a new one.

I have a very similar problem and I am using completely different hardware, so it has to be a BF2 flaw (I know, who would believe that?). Here is my post:

I've have searched many forum posts and have not found anything dealing with this problem. I only noticed this problem after patch 1.2. The 1.21 patch did not change the problem.

                          PROBLEM

It occurs during gameplay and someone else fires any weapon, I see parts of the background flash black in sync with the firing. I have not noticed this when I am firing however. I have seen this on all BF2 and SF maps. It is very annoying to try and spot a sniper when half of the hillside is flashing.

                          MY SYSTEM

                          Dell XPS 600
                          Pentium D 820 (2.8 Ghz)
                          1 Gb DDR2 533 Mhz RAM
                          160 Gb Serial ATA HD
Nvidia Geforce 6800 256 Mb PCIe (not sure manufacture since it came with system)
                          Nvidia nForce4 SLI 16x mobo
*I think that's most of the important stuff*

I am currently running a dual boot OS:
Windows XP Pro with SP2 and all updates
Windows XP 64 bit with SP2 (I think) and all updates

I currently use the 64x for gaming, but the problem occurs on either OS.

                          Drivers:

                          XP Pro:
                          VIDEO - 81.98, 82.12 and few others
                          MOBO - nForce4 AMD/Intel X16 - Windows XP/2000 (32-Bit) 6.85

                          64 bit:
VIDEO - Windows XP Professional x64 Edition 81.98
                          MOBO - nForce4 AMD/Intel X16 - Windows XP Professional x64 Edition 6.83

Anytime I would change drivers, I would completely uninstall the old ones, reboot, and run Driver Cleaner Pro before installing the new drivers.

I have not OC any component in my system, and I even had the temp monitor going on a second monitor to see if the GPU temp was a problem. The GPU ran about 60c during gaming so that shouldn't be the problem.

I have even completely uninstalled BF and SF and reinstalled from scratch. I tried only runing the complete 1.21 patch with no change. I have even formatted both OSs and performed fresh installs. The problem occurs no matter what I try. Surely I have given you guys enough info to go on. This is very frustrating and is having a significant impact on gameplay.

                          Thanks,

                          MOPP4

Here is what I have found out...

Low Terrain does not work with Medium Textures.
Low Terrain does work with Low and High Textures.

Try changing some of the settings.

MOPP4-USARTY, your problem might be with Dynamic Lights settings. It still could be a driver issue, try reinstalling driver without uninstalling the old one.
