Here was my situation. The game installed fine, and worked fine without any patches. I had a lot of problems trying to patch it. It would usually get an error, but the few times the patching actually worked, I'd have the CTD at 62% problem.
This was my 2nd copy of BF2. My first copy has always worked fine on another computer. So... I copied the BF2 folder from that computer (which is patched current), to the one I was trying to get it to work on. I figured it was a long shot, but I was running out of ideas. It works fine. Since the CD-key is in the registry, nothing like that gets changed and it runs like it's my 2nd copy.
I have no idea what the problem was. Before I got my new computer, the one I couldn't get working was my old computer, and it always worked fine. The only thing that's different now is the motherboard and drives.
Hopefully if anyone out there is having the exact same problem as I did, this will work for them. It'll be interesting to see what happens when the next patch comes out.
