Online multiplayer games on 56k dial up?!

Hi, just wondered if anyone has any ideas for games that will perform ok on dial up.

I don't get my broadband connection back until next Thursday and need something to pass the time with! I can just about play Day of Defeat, with a ping of 200-300 on some servers.

I can't wait to get back on BF2, download Red Orchestra:Ostfront 41-45, and I suppose Euro Force is next week too.

Well Quake 3, SOF2, SOF1, Vietcong etc, I have had these games since they hit the shelves and they play alright on dial up, but dial up is something no one who plays games online should have.

              Counter Strike:Source

Back before i had broadband, that was the only game i could play on dial-up, and it ran very smooth, just try not to get above 12 people and you will be good.

I used to play Desert Combat for BF42 on the University of Teeside 64 player server with a ping of 150, very playable, it's all I played when I had 56k.
I had to play BF2 for 2 months in single player because of the restrictive net access I had.

However as soon as my current internet came online I went into BF2 multiplayer and never came back. :p

Hmmm, what a good idea! Desert Combat. Great reason to reinstall 1942, I know I've got the latest DC version on disk somewhere..

                  Good comments, thanks guys.

Actually, last night I thought I'd go mad and try DoDS! Gosh. Anyway, actually the ping wasn't bad 250ms, apart from random lag which froze the game once in a while, it was great.

I am assuming BF2 uses the most bandwidth of many games though, what with all the action going on. Might give it a try earlier, but I expect I'll be auto-kicked for a high ping.

I tried BF2 with 56k and got an average ping of 800, was totally unplayable lol.
You need BF42 1.6 patch and 1.61 patch, then DC 0.7, DCFinal.
                    Here is the server:

Hell I might even reinstall myself and join you if you decide to do this.

Re: Online multiplayer games on 56k dial up?!

Great thanks for the info DP.

Fortunately I had all the patches backed up, and DC, and DC Final! What a bit of forward thinking that was in 2004/5 Not like me.

Anyway, it is very playable, yet after about five min's of 190ish ping, I get the infamous "Network connection problem detected" box pop up. I am assuming it is the ISP, being dial up, I betting they are allocating bandwidth to paying subscribers, preferentially.

The other problem, is a lot of hasty server admins that kick without hesitation when a 200 pinger comes on their server. I'm playing fine, I'm sure it doesn't really affect anyone else, but hey, oh well.

Which ISP were you on DrunkenPirate?

I sold my copy of MoH a long time ago. I guess this is a good reason to hang onto those old games, it was quite fun online.

Well I've just about given up now. It is just too laggy to play anything except online pool.

I've had some great games, found a few servers that played fantasticaly, but then it doesn't always work like that when I re-visit them. Also the ammount of servers that would have been fine for me to play on, no lag, that I've been auto-kicked from is unbelievable.

I think Punkbuster is lagging BF1942, even though I updated it, it's still sending and recieving info which I believe is the cause of the problem. It plays fine for first minute, then I see the Punbuster master server message, and get the "Network connection problems detected" message.

Oh well, only a few days left to broadband! Thank god...
