I'm having\I've had every problem imaginable. (CTDs, BSoDs, failed patches etc)

    First, my specs.

    Abit AV8 Motherboard
    Sapphire ATi 9800Pro
Athlon Athlon 64 (running at about 1.8Ghz, I had it overclocked but BF2 caused a problem that required me to clear the cmos)
    2x512mb Crucial DDR PC3200
120Gb SATA hard drive (Maxtor, IIRC)
    Sound Blaster Audigy 4
    350w Seasonic PSU
Windows 2000 (blah blah XP32 whatever, it works perfectly on my friend's 2000)

Ever since I got the game I've been having problems. Most of the time I'd play for a few minutes and it would crash to desktop. Either that or it would crash to a blue screen with an error message usually involving either an ATi .dll, win32k.sys or ntoskrnl.exe. It seemed that manually updating punkbuster stopped the BSoDs, but I was still getting CTDs. I tried reinstalling and deleting the cache many times to no avail. I also reinstalled drivers, with no apparent result.

1.2 didn't make things any better. For a start I spent the better part of two days getting it to actually patch the game properly. Then I started getting straight lock ups with no errors, quicker CTDs and blue screens without any error messages. They're the ones that **** me off most. So I once again tried reinstalls, clearing the cache, 1.2s downloaded from different locations and once again, nothing.

So then 1.21 comes along, and I optimistically install it in the knowledge that they've fixed a problem with ATi cards. My problems got worse. BSoDs during loading (in the same files a before minus the ATi DLLs), more blank blue screens, and more frequent lock ups. And that's when the game actually opens instead of just showing the BF2 logo and then giving up.

This is where things get really annoying. I figure the best idea would be to reinstall it, repatch etc and hope that the game was buggered pre 1.21 and that it'll be ok after I reinstall. But then the patches stop working again. I don't even get "Patching Failed". It just skips the files it doesn't want to patch (or gets part way through them) and then carries on to say that patching was succesful. I try to play the game and it gives me an error about missing files straight away.

I'm very close to giving up entirely and smashing the BF2 disc up. I need ideas before I go insane. All along the way I've been trying different graphics settings, different sound settings, different patches, different drivers, reinstalls, cache clearing and nothing has worked.

Note: Every other recent game I have works perfectly. CoD2, Black and White 2, HL2, Empire at War, GTA: SA, etc.

BF2 was made for Windows XP.

I know it was made for XP, but if it works on other people's computers and they're running win2k, obviously it isn't the problem.
