BF2 does not startup

Ever since 1.2 I've had this problem, I thought 1.21 might have fixed it, but it does not.

Basically, I click on BF2 icon. The little BF2 logo screen pops up, then screen goes dark. My hard drive starts spinning up, and about ten to twenty seconds later, my computer returns to the desktop, and my hard drive spins down again. I check my process manager to find no BF2-related processes running. This happens every time I try to start the game.

I am running an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ with 1.00 GB of RAM, on Windows XP SP1. I also have an ATI Radeon 9800 PRO w/ 128MB VRAM.

I have installed a couple of BF2 mods in the past, but all have since been uninstalled ages ago - and uninstalling them did not break the game. This issue coincided directly with the 1.2 patch.

uhh well besides the obvious updating to windows you should do(svcpk 2)
Have you tried reinstalling the entire game perhaps with the all in one patch?

I am currently experiencing that very thing. . . The other day I was in the game . . found a server . . clicked on it to load. The splash screen appeared and for some reason my PC froze before the server ever started loading. Well . . when I rebooted my PC, clicked to load the game . . . all I got was the splash screen w/my hard drive running as usual . .. then it closes back to desk top with nothing happening. I then click into my task manager to see my BF2.exe running at 99 cpu usage. Anyone have a solution?

and yes I definately reinstalled the total game including Special Forces.

Well, not the very same thing. There are two differences: Yours happened after your PC froze and you had to reboot, and according to your process manager BF2.exe is up and running, hogging your whole CPU.

Although I'm sure we are experiencing very similar problems.


About your rank: Your title on these forums are unrelated to your BF2 account and rank, you will simply get a higher rank on these forums as you make more posts. Although I have seen many sigs linked to BF2 accounts, I personally can not help you obtain one of these sigs.

Edit: Oh, I just remembered. If you go to edit your profile you can enter your BF2 PID into one of the fields. That should work.

A similar issue is happening to me too. I get the BF2 splash screen then nothing happens except for a bf2.exe process runs. Game never loads.. There is another process that starts called ~e5.0001 but this looks to be PB.

My setup is an AMD dual core 3800, Nvidia 7800GT, 2 GB RAM..

Any help is appreciated. I may try reloading but I would like to avoid it. Good thing Quake4 still works lol.

similar thing happened to me two weeks ago. My 6600GT vid card must have died, becuase when I put in my 9800pro it worked fine.

Other than that you may have iinstalled the game a patches wrong.
If you did a new install of the game you need to use the full patch.
If you upgrading from 1.2 both the 1.21 incremental and the full patch will do the job. Either way you should just install the full patch whether or not you already did and see if that fixes it.

Hello, i had this very same problem on wednesday night (load BF2, splash screen > black screen with it stuck in 800 x 600 resolution) eventually i uninstalled my BF2 and graphics drivers.

Re-installed my graphics drivers, BF2, full patch v1.2 (i was using the incremental before) then updated punkbuster. but BF2 would still not work, i am using a 6600 nVidia too and thought it to either be the card or possibly directX9c.

The next day i took my PC to work and put the airline throught it to clear the dust out (i usually do this once a month) came home and ran dxdiag to see if DX9c was running ok. everything checked out..started BF2 and it ran. so as confused as i am, my problem has been fixed.

Maybe my post can/cannot help but i thought i should add it all the same.

I have the same exact problem with my AIW 9800 Pro 128 there Anonymous. I click on the icon to startup and the screen goes black for like 8 seconds and than it goes right back to the desktop.
I have 1 gig pc3200, seagate HD, Nforce 3 MB. I have the 6.2's installed.

I went back to v1 and it works again. I then patched with 1.12 and all is still well. I think I will stop here until I hear more about 1.2x issues.

All right guys...I talked with EA today as my system continually returned to the desktop after launching BF2 after installing any 1.2+ patch. They suggested I completely (I mean completely) uninstall BFS and clean the registry. I used UNINSTALLER (they have a trial version on their website good for 30 days...www.ursoftware.com). This cleaned my registry of BF2 data. I also went back and made sure all of my BF2 folders were erased and then rebooted my system.
I disabled my Norton Antivirus and Password Protector.
I then installed BF2 (did the reboot) and installed BF2 SF (I rebooted again).
Validated that BF2 worked (it did) and then installed the 1.22 Patch.
IT WORKS.

you could try deleting C:\Documents and Settings\Greg\My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\0001\video.con

This something that fixed my issue but ended up using the correct no cd patched exe that matched the version of battlefield currently installed. That was all that was causing my problem.
