Manual Install of BF2

I know there was a way to manually install but I cant find the thread which says how to do it, does anyone know or can they help find the thread? I'm sure Talus know's, hope he's about tonight :) .
My mate gets the splash screen, it goes black then back to desktop, thought a manual install might help.

Have you tried deleting the profile from hard drive and start BF2 and use default settings?

Does that help with the problem his friend is experiencing? (splash screen -> black screen -> desktop)

I will try that solution when i get back home later tonight.

I have never heard of a manual install before...I've heard of a manual UNinstall though...
