    Ranks.

Why is the 2nd.Lieutnant bar in Gold, and the 1st. Lieutnant bar in Silver...

The same goes for the Golden "ganja" mark for Major, and Silver for Lt. Col.

I have debated with other players about it , people wich has accused Silver Lt. (1st.LT), to be ranked lower than Golden Lt. (2nd)... And I have to admit, thats the logical way to think..

I know its based on US armed forces rank insignia.. But there´s no logic in it, what so ever.

I'm not sure that there is any logic associated with it, but more likely just a tradition. I couldn't find a history of rank insignias quickly, but I'm certain it could be found on google somewhere. It defies logic like the genders of nouns in German (or other languages). I had trouble grasping why one thing is male, versus female or neuter (der, die, das), and no one could explain to me why it was. The response was that it has pretty much has just always been that way.

It just is. There is no particular reason.

            Re: Ranks.

The reason is, back then silver are supposedly worth more than gold, so silver rank is more senior (now gold is worth more than silver, but they just kept the traditions). same goes for the Olympic game medals before the 1910's where silver is acutally awarded to the 1st place, gold second and broze third. do a google search, and i bet u will find that silver is worth more than gold about a hundred years ago.

Well i didnt realy read it well at wiki, but i think it stated that 2st LT came first and got the gold, so maybe the silver came after?

                        Re: Ranks.

Gold is only better than silver when it comes to monetary value and medals (like in the Olympics).

When it comes to ranks, like in Battlefield 2, silver is always above gold.

Wrong. Only Silver and gold are used for dress uniforms. Copper is not used for either the USMC or the USArmy. I don't think it is used for any US branch, but that is only a guess as I have not seen any copper emblems after being around the US military branches for over 21 years.

The post from barracudaj is something I have not seen. After 9 years in the USMC and 12 years with my wife in the USAF, the reason for gold and silver was never really raised. Thanks for that post.

Since the Colonel and Generals are all silver (upper ranks), the gold is only used for two ranks, 2nd LT (which the single bar is usually called a "butter bar") and Major. Both are the same symbol as the next upper rank but in gold.

If the Major leaf wasn't gold too, I'd guess that the butter bar was gold so that you could identify the lieutenants most likely to know nothing and have a stick up their ass

I like the thread too. Your use of butter bar brings me back to my Air Force days. Got out in 96. Hadn't heard bb since. Thanks for the trip in the wayback machine.
