Sorry but another Vid Card Upgrade Thread

    Hey Folks,

Sorry about the redundant post but my situation is a bit different and I didn't want it to get lost in the melee of posts from the other ones.

I'm using an ATI 9800 Pro and I really do like it but it's getting old and needs to be replaced. At this time, I can't afford a total revamp of my system so a switch to PCI-E is not in the cards. With this said I am wondering what your opinions are on how this BFG 7800GS AGP - VC-BFG-7800GS/AGP ranks in comparison and if it's worth the cash. Here is the link to the card I want

Welcome to Procare Cyber, your trusted partner in navigating the complex world of cyber risk and data privacy.

I know allot of you will tell me to be patient, save my money and do the full revamp but this will not be possible for the next 6 to 12 months so right now an AGP upgrade is more feasible.

    Any thoughts anyone??

    Cheers and Thanks

In the other thread where we are discussing the same topic as you, [2bit]Modmaven linked me to this handy chart. Hope this helps you.

          Thanks man,

That link worked but there is no mention of a move from 9800 Pro to a 7800 GS. Can anyone else help me out?

            Hi folks,

Can anyone else help me out here? It would probably help out a few others who have a 9800 Pro and are considering either upgrading completely or partially.

            Cheers and Thanks :)

The 7800gs is a very good card, best AGP out there, it's just that I don't think it's really worth the $300 price tag since it doesn't perform quite as well as the 7800gt.
I think the best option would be to wait until you have enough money for a full upgrade. Well, actually with the new 7600 series it might be possible. :)
If you have a 939 socket CPU, you could get a 939 PCIe motherboard for less than $100 and a 7600 for $200.

Edit: Ah nvm... just saw you have your specs in your sig and you don't have a 939...

My system is in my sig, and im thinking of upgrading, but im going for the full revamp... I chose that over just a vid card upgrade coz my cpu is a 754 socket and coz of the lack of AGP cards in the future.

If you do decide to go down the same path as me, look here, its what im thinking of getting. http://www.totalbf2.com/forums/showthread.php?t=61769

there are bundle upgrades around that range in price, you dont hav to totally revamp ur pc in 1 go you can salvage from your old machine upgrade slowly

                    Thanks for the advice guys,

I think I need to be a bit more clear though.

At this point and for the next year I CANNOT upgrade fully. Hell I can't even upgrade partially because as far as I'm concerned a partial upgrade involves a new motherboard. This means a PCI-E slot which means a PCI-E card. This also means a Socket 939 or greater CPU which means more money that I can spend at this time.

SO, what I'm looking for is someone's opinion on wether or not the difference in performance gained from switching to a 7800gs FROM an ATI 9800 PRO is worth the extra cost.

If anyone has done this or has an opinion on it, I'd REALLY appreciate it lol.

Ok, if you want it in terms of wht will you get out of the 7800GS, as you have 1.5 gigs of RAM, you should be able to play BF2 on all high. I dont know what you can at the moment, but im guessing its most on med. If you caould get another 512Mb of RAM, you will be easilt able to play on all high with no stuttering/lag with the 7800GS.

But if you want to get the 7800GS, get in quick, they are discontinuing them...

I haved yet to see a report of them being discontinued.
But if you're able to sell your current card for $40 or $50, then yeah, I think it would be a good deal. It's really up to you; the 7800gs will play everything on high, but buying it takes $300 away from next upgrade, which will most likely be PCIe and you won't be able to use that $300 card.
Of course, if you are planning on upgrading withing a year or so, I'd say go for it.

I believe that was more about the 7800gt and gtx, the PCIe versions of the 7800 series. The 7800gs is the only mid to high-end AGP card, and at this time there have not been announcements for a 7900gs.
