One thing I have noticed that has given me success over the years playing BF 1942 to BF2 is doing things a bit differently. Doing things the enemy wouldn't expect. Trying to out think them. I don't have the beefiest system in the world so...its my ammo I bring to the battlefield (pun not intended) to stay alive.
Here are some tips that help me and...I hope they help you.
1. Flank your enemy. Head on attacks are fun and makes you feel like you are a star in a John Woo movie but the biggest difference is the main character in his films doesnt get turned into a vaulting rag doll 3 seconds in. Running at your enemy with reckless abondon, although fun, most of the time just ends with you picking your next respawn point. If the main access point to a flag is a few certain paths -- go a different way! So stupid of a concept but I have got the jump on so many people just by coming in from a different angle...if you can come in from a least direct route from behind? Do it. From the side? Great. The way they are facing and waiting? Dead. If you can coordinate these attacks with squads thats even better. Attacking from behind and the side will definitely give you the advantage.
2. Observe the surroundings. As I said with flanking running at the enemy directly is just bad. I have also seen a dramatic improvement with my success rate in attacking a defended position by just taking 3-5 seconds to get a lay of the land. How many units are you attacking? Is anyone on the roof? Tanks? APC? Just take a quick survey and plot your next course. A lot of times by waiting a few seconds the enemy troops seem to get bored and abandon their post. Less enemy...less chances for you to die. You want the initiative. You will not get the initiative if YOU are the one who is surprised.
3. Roads Less Traveled. Along the same lines as my flanking rant. As you have all noticed after playing the same maps over and over is patterns. A lot of the maps give very obvious direction to players (roads, waterways, quick routes etc.) that seems to guide players in consistent and predictable direction of attack and transportation. You know this because each and everyone of you (sans those that are new to the game) know your spots and know the best ways to defend, attack and destroy the enemy. Since I personally try my best to not be fodder and am thankfully over the learning curve of BF2 (dying every few steps in the early days) I have found that by doing something unexpected I get the jump on the enemy that is just enough to save my a$$. Another key benefit to going a less popular route is that you will be killed less by Air and Sniping. Snipers want a spot thats well hidden, strategic and, most importantly, where they know people go! Pilots want to be able to kill ground assets and armor. They know where they can do that more often, and because people are predictable, there are plenty of people to kill that way.
So thats just a couple tips. A little lengthy but maybe it will give some green troops a bit more life on the field and maybe give some of the veterans out there a reason to rethink the patterns we all can fall victim too. Now I could give some descriptive examples of some great routes but...:) I want to save my arse! :)
Happy Hunting!
