Pagefile settings 2 gigs of ram

Hmmm, just wondering, what should i set my pagefile to, to windows control, or.... because i've been fooling around and havent really noticed any difference...

i tried to remove my pagefile, but it just keeps comming back.... or maybe because i forgot to reboot... LOL

HEY rule of thumb is to set your page file to 1.5 X the amount of RAM

What you are supposed to do is to move or Add a slightly larger page file to a
Partition on a Seperate Channel other than your C drive.

So if you use IDE use a partition on a seperate HDD on the other IDE chain to see the performance difference.

Optimizing your page file when you're running low on RAM is always a good idea. When all physical RAM in a computer is in use, Windows starts using the hard disk as if it were additional RAM. This is why we have a Pagefile (also called the swap file). Because RAM memory is a lot more faster than the hard disk, whenever the computer begins to use the Pagefile to relieve memory pressure, we begin to experience a drastic performance degradation.

One of the most effective things you can do to improve performance is ensure that there is enough RAM available to avoid frequent paging (swapping) of memory contents between disk and RAM.

This means that the actual limit on the memory used by all applications is the amount of RAM installed plus the maximum size of the Pagefile.

How much swap space do you need? That depends the amount of RAM you have and the programs you use. The rule of the thumb is 1.5 times the amount of system memory, unless you have too much load on your system.

Page file is usually 2 times the amount of RAM you have, sometimes more. So you would need to set your page file to 4-4.5 GB if you have 2GB of RAM.

alright thnx ! that's a good read... i got a question so i put like pagefile minimum 1.5 x ram right ? and maximum aswell... ?? oh and how do i create a different channel accept for my C: drive i never really done that :P thnx for the replies guys !

Ok simply remove your page file. You do not need it. I am being serious. I have been running pagefile-less for 8 months, XPProSP2, stable as a rock with 2gb CL2 memory, even better when you change your boot.ini so that your machine uses +3GB. Page files are silly and useless over 2gb.

Why is it that in all production environments you NEVER disable the pagefile, not even in systems with 4 GB+ on server systems?? Wouldn't you do that if it isn't needed at all??

It is very well explained in the links above at tweakhound.com, no respectable tweak site suggests disabling the page file, nor would Microsoft.

Removing the page file and you will actually use more RAM. Why?? because what could be put to drive and not used at all, now MUST be in RAM, and thus what could be left out of precious RAM before, now has to stay in RAM. That is because with a page file, Virtual Memory = PF + RAM, without a PF, WM = RAM.

Try reading the articles at tweakhound... unless you are suddenly out of hard drive space, there's no reason for disabling the page file.
