What I normally do on my 1920x1200 widescreen is set the display settings so that images smaller than native LCD resolution are not stretched to fullscreen. Then I run at 1600x1200 with black bars on the sides of the image.
What he said. Widescreen is not supported in BF2. Same setup here. You can stretch (which may be default on some setups) or deal with the bars on the sides. You can force a resolution but the game does not render to it. Forcing it to run in a aspect ratio it is not designed to run in makes the image look funky to me.

You need to create a shortcut icon somewhere that you can edit. This will not work by autorunning BF2 from the CD.

Rightclick the shortcut and click properties. We need to change the "Target:" field.

      We need to add this text to the end of it: +menu 1 +widescreen 1 +szx 1680 +szy 1050

Your final product will look like this:

      "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +widescreen 1 +szx 1680 +szy 1050

That will get the program running in full screen mode. I forget why I added the +menu 1 for.. it does something. And I'm not sure if the +widescreen 1 is neccasary.. but it works for me.

Heres an ingame 1680x1050 shot. The map and menus are slightly stretched horizontally, but none of the in-game rendered content is stretched (scopes are round etc..).

Your minimap is not round either, hence the stretching. You can run it in widescreen, but it is not true widescreen. You have distortion. There is a big to do about all of this and even EA has acknowleged the game does not render in widscreen.

Yea the minimap and menus are stretched, but ingame rendered content is normal aspect (not streched). Vehicles look normal, not distorted. I can live with the silly minimap streched.

Heres a pic of the scopes to show they are not distorted:

I can provide pics of other ingame objects to show you that they are not distorted in any way.

And that will produce what I stated for option 2: a non-distorted image with the top and bottom sliced off. Probably acceptable for some people but not true widescreen support. See http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/masterlist.php for more info (including images showing the difference).

Ok, for the record BF2 DOES NOT support widescreen. Adding the code to the command line simply makes the image larger and cuts off the top and bottom of the screen. So by doing this, instead of gaining viewable area on the sides, you are actually losing it on the top and bottom.

Here is a link, with 13 pages of people complaining to Dice about the lack of widescreen support. And the command line fix is here, since last June, explaining how this is just a work-a-round so there are no black bars on the sides.

edit: Pretty much the same info as in above posts

Re: Question about BF2 and wide-aspect LCDs

I have a Samsung 244t 24 " monitor and with ONE- EVGA 7800 gtx I can run BF2 at max settings with 4AA and stay around 70 FPS. My resolution is 1920 x 1200, the larger monitor may require you to drop the settings slightly but other then that ONE high quality 7800 GTX should handle it just fine. Aslo I play on the widescreen setting. If it IS stretched you would never know. Everything looks completly proportionate. As long as you change the shortcut that should not be an issue. Looks sweet whether is is true widescreen or 4:3.

I should also note my computer maybe an exception. My video card has some help. So the same performance may not be reliable on a lesser PC.

              Fatal1ty X-fi soundcard 64mb onboard ram
              AMD 64 X2 3800 OC'd to 2.75 on H2o
              ASUS 32n sli motherboard
              3 - 36 Raptor in RAID 0
4 GB OCZ ram at OC'd (2-3-3-5 timings)

That is what widescreen is though. You get more on the side, and less on the top. Same thing as if it was normal "supported" widescreen.

What is on top doesnt matter anyways. You only looking up, if yuo looking at a helicopter or plane.

Im going to be getting a Samsung 24" pretty much the best one out right now.

I'm pretty sure widescreen doesn't mean you loose anything from the top or bottom. It's simply more on the sides...
