    BF2 suddenly lagging

Ok, all of a sudden my BF2 is running laggy as crap, almost as if I only have 512MB of ram. It will stutter and hiccup even with the framerate reading 70-90fps. Sometimes it will now even drop into the 20's and down to 15 fps after 20+ minutes of gameplay. I've tried all the standard windows maintenance etc, and nothing seems to be working. Other games play perfectly fine. I reinstalled the game and repatched it and its still lagging progressively worse over the course of a few minutes of gameplay.

Anyone else get this problem and how did you fix it?

Buy some more RAM, you ain't gonna tell me the game runs great on 512MB. You seem to have some decent CPU and GPU, but the amount of RAM will bottleneck all of it and make the 7800GT as fast as a 9600XT in BF2.

I have 2x1gb running. I said that it is behaving as if it was using only 512mb of it. I have read that others have had the same problem, but my problem is happening just as bad in Single player.

Just tried playing after updating punkbuster, same result. The stuttering is almost instantaneous. I do hear my harddrives clicking when playing, even though I have 2gb. How on earth could this game be reading off the hard drive unless its using a pagefile for small crap?

Try to remember if you installed or modified anything between when it was working fine and it started being crap.

Its not a Death click from the HD, I know what that sounds like, its the reading/writing sound. I tried changing my page file to my storage drive and it does the same.

hmm could be that "rumour" of a memory leak on certain setups.

dont know anything official about it though

Virus scan is not a standard windows anything. It is a completely different process and needs to be performed separately and you never mentioned once scanning for virus'. So when your hard drive is running and you are lagging and you don't think your HD should be running, the possibility of a virus or spyware is definately there.

Checking for spyware and viruses is something the most novice computer users consider routine maintenance. But anyways....

If it was a memory leak why would it manifest itself randomly and stick around? I literally did nothing different and changed nothing before and after the problem started. I even tried lowering the overclock on my ram thinking that could have caused it but its still there.

Every other game runs fine, getting 81xx's in 3dmark05. Getting 50+fps average in the fear stress test.

You over estimate the novice computer user, a simple yes would have sufficed.

Memory leak I thought was more a server side issue than a client side issue.

Did your graphics settings change on you, where all of a sudden all shadows are turned up on you. BF2 has a habit of doing that to me. Have you tried turning all your settings in Video to low or off and see if it makes a difference?

Would you presume I am a novice computer user after reading my sig?

Anyways, No different in any graphics settings. Even if it did make a difference it is unacceptable to turn down the graphics with a PC that should rock the crap out of the game.
