Do I need to re-patch after installing SF?

I have BF2 vanilla installed and patched to 1.2. If I now install SF, will I need to download and apply the full patch again, or will things work right away?

Yes you need to re-patch.

Yeah you need to reinstall. You shouldn't have to re-download thoyugh, keep all the patch installers you have in a created forlder or on a disk/flash drive...just in case.
