Ah, so it seems you have been decieved by the famous "rubber knife" prank. You see, while you are loading a map, the people with quick PC's who finish loading first swap your real knife with a plastic one while you are distracted by the loading screen. It really gets annoying!

Anyway it happens to me almost everytime i knife someone. I usually need to hit the guy twice for the game to register the hit... Thats BF2 alright!
I once heard a 'cling..!' sound, (like when you are knifing metal) when I knifed on the mine which is on the back of every engineer... He did not recieve any damage but heard it to (clan member on TS)
I have not been able to reproduce this...
But, since he was lying on sand or rock, there must have been a 'metal' part on the engineers soldier model...

Yet if you think about it, stuff like that should only be implemented into the PRMM, not BF2 normal.
