    weird voip problem

I have a very strange problem with voip. First, the bf2voicesettings has never worked for me. Never see any mic activity and crashes when attempting to save. Still, voip worked fine in the game from the time the game was released until around the time patch 1.2 was released. Now it has stopped working in patched BF2 (including versions it worked with before). I've reinstalled (including wiping the profile & cache folders) and tested multiple patches.

Mic works fine in DXDiag and other apps.
Mic works fine in BF2 v1.00 and 1.02.
Mic does not work in BF2 1.03, 1.12, or 1.2 in-game microphone test.
Same behavior in both Windows 2000 Pro and Windows XP Pro (installed XP in a new partition for testing after the problem started).
Using latest audio driver from Dell.

    Dell Inspiron 9200; Pentium M 755 (2GHz), Radeon 9700, 1.5GB RAM, Sigmatel C-Media 9750 onboard audio

    Have you done my trick?

    Join a server.
Wait for the map to load.
    Alt-Tab out to desktop.
Access Windows' Sound and Audio control panel applet.
    Visit the 'Voice' tab.
Click on the 'Volume' button under 'Voice Recording'.
Ensure that the 'Microphone' check box is selected.
Ensure that the 'Microphone' volume is 100%'.
Click the 'Advanced' button under 'Microphone' and check the mic db boost on.
    Alt-tab back in to BF2.
    See if VOIP works now.

      Re: weird voip problem

I couldn't test online but I did try without going online and it didn't help but I did find out what the problem is. Apparently, on my system at least, with patches 1.03-1.20 if the BF2 mic threshold is set to anything other than zero the mic does not work at all. It's still weird because I'm pretty sure that wasn't the case up to 3 weeks ago. I played with the threshold earlier when trying to fix this problem but I didn't realize that changing that setting would have no effect on the mic test until it was applied. I had assumed that that was a real-time adjustment to be used during the test.

Umm...if you aren't going online, then how do you know if it isn't working?

I only go online over the weekend (and it wasn't working online) but I can tell it isn't working when offline by using the microphone test in the audio settings. If the threshold is anything other than 0 then the volume display never moves and the microphone input is not played back. When it is set to 0 the volume display moves and microphone input is played back through the speakers. I can't guarantee that it will work online now but I'm 99% sure it will.

Yeah, I don't trust the microphone test. In fact, I don't trust ANYTHING about VOIP in BF2...it's just plain buggy!

Get a friend to join you online to test out what I suggested.

i used to have to do the alt-tab trick, and still do! but it doesnt like alt tabbing anymore, and when i get back into game i get the game with a flickering turqoise screen, so annoying, anybody know how i can stop this? or maybe bind a key to toggle microphone mute so i dont have to alt-tab?????
