Besides being something that can be used as a transport, (irl some can do 80+ mph) armour is also used as a mobile barrier between troops and the enemy.
It's not something you see a lot of, because most people when they get in a tank, full speed it to wherever the nearest(mined and guarded)flag, but when you see tanks surrounded by infantry progressing at walking pace, it does look very cool and war-like! I think tanks should have a go-slow on them,(by toggling the shift key prehaps) so that squads can walk by them when moving from one place to another.(obviously this wouldn't work on some of the larger maps)
If tank guy and gunner(who would be in the best position for spotting) are surrounded by troops (say 2 each side 2 behind(need bigger squads)) they are a formidable death snail.
The chances are that a first strike will occurr on the tank, and(as long as everyone does there jobs properly) repairs will be on the job straight away, gunner can spot, troops will spread, everyone will know where the threat is, and it can be dealt with.
As long as you don't get AT's trying to take out snipers and people doing stupid things with nades,(Karkand is getting silly now on anything over 32) and it doesn't degenerate into a mess of bunny-diving dolphin humping(*as are some of the so called 'pro' games ) then the illusion happens and you get really engrossed in what is easily the best war-game you can play sat on your arse!
The only reason i say this (before the flames) is that i've seen too many idiots (from medics to snipers-SNIPERS driving tanks?!) spawn away from squad to tank-rush the nearest flag-get killed-respawn at tank spawn tk for tank etc...
(and full metal jacket was on telly last night)
I know what i'm suggesting requires a degree of teamwork and communication that's just not present in the games i play, perhaps it's a server thing (perhaps not).
* I was hoping that a clan server would contain much better/tighter gameplay, so i downloaded a match off E sports that a lot of you were raving about(forget the thread but it was one of the players that was recommended as the sh*t) and it was a bad bad display of bouncing around ny pretty much all of them, which made me loose faith, but then i had a game on Swizz air last night, and my squad was a tight mix of the right elements, they listened to orders/requests(as did the commander!) and looked after their squad leader!... faith restored.
My two cents that's all...

It does not happen too often, but my number one goal as a tanker is to support the ground troops.
) On subject of tanks providing rolling cover etc, good theory but arty comes about too soon on this and can see this method leading to mass deaths!
