how do you autheticate your download? is there a serial or something? or is it just a file like the patch?

for instance, is it possible to just share the file with others?

You get a download key to use after you pay for it. You neter the key at the site to download the game. I think once you install it EF is tied to your BF2 CD key, so sharing = bad.

No what he means is, when the download server bandwidth goes to hell, can you pay for the game online,a nd then get the actual files from someone else like a friend who put the files on a disc. Sothat you are still legally paying for it.

Afaik you can only install EF through the EA Downloader. And only if you have a valid subscription to EF you will see EF showing in the downloaders game listing.
So if you get it from a friend, and want to copy the downloaded file to the downloader's cache folder, you'll only be able to install if it shows in the games list. If you haven't entered a valid serial number previously to that, it will simply not show up in the list.
That's how I think it'll work.
All the installations are going to be monitored by a central EA server, and the key is going to be tied to your account as soon as you login to the game with your BF2 username.
