ok, i think i got things working. it's really hard to tell though, because every time i try to start the game, it just hangs on the 'connecting to login server' screen and then the game freezes up. this has happened over a dozen times. every time, i had to reboot. i've just set it to windowed mode so i can shut it down this way, but i can't figure out why it won't connect to the logon server. and when playing single player, do i have to connect to the logon server just to play on my box with bots? if not, anyone have suggestions.

You can create a single player account on the Manage Accounts screen.

After a couple of days of tweaking and figuring out what works best, i finally got everything running. Not always smoothly, but it's working. And i've discovered that Qtracker works wonderfully and quickly for finding servers and getting you connected to them.
