In around a months time i will be purchasing a new graphics card. With a budget of £300.

Im looking for a PCI compatible graphics card.

Any recommendations?

oohhh man 300 quid is a lot, hmm a few things you need to check mate, post your power supply wattage and amps and stuff, your processor and ram and it will all be fine :P

7900gtx should be out by then and I believe it will be around tht price. Rumors say it's going to be around $400 in the US. I think that converts down to below £300. ATI's x1900xt might also be a good choice (can't really compare atm because 7900 has not been released), but acording to ebuyer.com, they are over your budget by about £50 inc VAT.
Off-topic question: why doesn't anybody call it a pound? Or is it not a pound? I always see "quid" on these forums...
Edit: Oops, hehe its the 7800gtx 512 that is gonna be $399... 7900gtx is set to be about $499, which puts it at about the same price as the 1900xt. Soooo... you could get a 7800gtx 512, but I would suggest paying the extra £50 and getting the 7900gtx or the 1900xt.
But I believe the best choice would be too keep what you have and then get a high-end DirectX 10 card when they come out later this year.

ok anyways well post your specs as quickly as possible, i g2g to bed now so here's the deal, go to google and search up PSU X1900XT and PSU 7900 GT that will tell you what powersupply you need for the cards ok

emmm also check if your processor won't bottleneck those cards, because than the card is kinda a waste of money... good luck mate cya tomorrow

Off topic but here is an explanation of the quid - pound thingy and the dollar - buck thingy

quid = one pound (£1) or a number of pounds sterling. Plural uses singular form, eg., 'Fifteen quid is all I want for it..', or 'I won five hundred quid on the horses yesterday..'. The slang money expression 'quid' seems first to have appeared in late 1600's England, when it originally meant a guinea (and according to Brewer's 1870 dictionary, a sovereign) and later transferred to mean a pound in the 1700's. In older times the plural form of quids was also used, although nowadays only very young children would mistakenly use the word 'quids'. Usage is now generally confined to 'quid' regardless of quantity, although the plural survives in the expression 'quids in', meaning 'in profit', used particularly when expressing surprise at having benefited from an unexpectedly good financial outcome, for example enjoying night out at the local pub and winning more than the cost of the evening in a raffle. Traditional reference sources of word and slang origins (Partridge, OED, Brewer, Shadwell, Cassells, etc) suggest that the slang 'quid' for pound is probably derived from the Latin 'quid', meaning 'what', particularly in the expression 'quid pro quo', meaning to exchange something for something else (loosely 'what for which'), and rather like the use of the word 'wherewithal', to mean money. Back on topic - If you can afford it go for the X1900 it has a new approch to the pixel shader processing as this seems to be the most graphics intensive process with a massive 48 pixel shader processors and it has 8 x 32 bit processors to handle the 256 bit memory interface to spread the load and prevent the bottlenecking seen in earlier cards. Check the specs below and go compare with the X1800 specs on ATI's site.

• 625MHz ATI Radeon R580 Core (X1900)
• 1450MHz GDDR3 Extreme performance memory
• 384 million transistors on 90nm fabrication process
• 48 pixel shader processors
• 8 vertex shader processors
• 256-bit 8-channel GDDR3/GDDR4 memory interface

• Dynamic Voltage and Clock Speed Control
• Ring Bus Memory Controller
• 512-bit internal ring bus for memory read

Just a bit of cut and pasting, do you honestly think I knew all this stuff up front.

ME who needs a note if I'm going to the shops for more than three items.

ME who has to go up and down stairs three or four times before I finally remember what it was that I went up for the first time around.

BTW I did get one of those Life Mates that you were talking about. It's where you get a Mate for Life and they give you a membership ring and all that. But it turns out that it's a legally binding contract and they can be really resource sapping and ultimately really expensive to get rid of.

I see everybody quoting their system specs on their posts. LOL since when did all you'r systems become penis extensions? It's a forum not the local paper free ad's.

living in the uk i know the excessive prices that they charge for pc parts but you will probably be able to get a 7800gtx for that price

Hey, Sod off mate! We post our system specs not as an extension of our penii, but as a way of showing who has a fairly buff machine. The PC gaming world is a lot like building and racing cars. You show off your car's specs if you are proud of them. So screw you for strolling into our community and trying to step on everyones dic-k fuqbag.
